International Sign Language Day was celebrated on 23rd September at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad. This special day was celebrated to ensure the best travel experience for the hearing impaired at the airport. Also, the main objective of the seminar was to enable frontline workers at the airport to communicate directly through sign language.

The workshop dedicated to persons with disabilities was attended by representatives of customer service officers, security agencies, airlines, housekeeping, parking management and other frontline stakeholders. Expert trainers from Ahmedabad-based Blind People’s Association conducted the workshop. Trained in sign language to enable disabled passengers to ask common questions at the airport. Instructors covered the basics of finger gestures as well as sign language to practice general communication.

SVPI Airport continuously strives for an excellent passenger experience and incremental increase in amenities. A special wheelchair counter has also been set up near the domestic drop off point for the convenience of passengers. Passengers taking advantage of which are praising heavily.

The airport team works hard to ensure that passengers have easy access to the terminal, check-in, immigration or priority boarding of flights. An artificial intelligence-based initiative ‘Desk of Goodness’ was also launched recently, where goodness champions can identify passengers who need help and reach out to them. Ahmedabad Airport has many facilities like accessible parking and drop/pick up points, accessible roads, building entry, ramps, handrails, accessible toilets, signage banners, low floor buses and so on.
