GMC Hummer EV faces 3rd recall in 1 year: Here’s what’s gone wrong this time

American automaker General Motors’ electric Hummer is facing its third recall in 2022 alone due to a technical issue with its battery pack. Earlier in August, the Hummer EV was recalled due to a problem with its high-voltage connector that could allow water to get into the battery pack. However, correcting the connector does not seem to have solved the issue as the Hummer EV’s battery pack could still get water-damaged due to improper sealing. If affected, the electric SUVs can blackout or suddenly lose power while operating. While no incidents have been reported yet, GMC has recalled 735 units of the Hummer EV that are affected by the faulty sealing.

The recall report was published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the US. The report states that the Hummer EVs produced between November 9, 2021, to September 28, 2022, are affected by the battery pack sealing issue. The battery packs are manufactured by Magna. GMC has identified that the root cause behind the battery pack issue is the improperly primed or electro-coated battery pack flanges. Which interferes with the proper adhesion of the sealant.

As per the NHTSA report, if water enters the Hummer EV’s battery pack, the vehicle can malfunction and the EV will display warning lights and messages to the driver. In March 2022, the Hummer EV faced its first recall in which only 10 vehicles were recalled. The minor recall was made due to faulty software embedded in the microcontroller that could make peripherals such as lights, tailgate and indicators misbehave.
