MUMBAI: The cyber police have arrested two men, including a 23-year-old Nashik resident, for creating a fake woman magistrate’s profile on a matrimonial website and fake stamps and documents. The Nashik accused was chatting with over a dozen men posing as a woman and was nabbed after a civil engineer lodged an FIR stating the ‘woman’ was demanding money and abusing him, said the police.
An FIR was registered on November 29 with the west region cyber crime police station of the city crime branch. The police said that the complainant, a 33-year-old man, worked in a private company in the city. He told the investigators that he had registered himself on a matrimonial site and come across a female magistrate’s profile. He liked it and sent a message. The ‘female magistrate’ replied to the message and the duo exchanged their WhatsApp numbers and began chatting.
“After two days of chatting, the woman asked the complainant to transfer her Rs 8,000. The complainant got suspicious and he asked her to meet him and said he would give her money when they met. She refused to meet him and later began abusing him. This is when the complainant lodged an FIR,” the police said.
On December 2, the cyber police first arrested Nashik resident Ankit Chavan for creating a fake female magistrate’s profile last month.
To gain the complainant’s trust, Chavan had sent him a fake arrest warrant, saying it was issued from her court. Besides this, Chavan had also sent photos of fake stamps of court to the complainant through WhatsApp. After the complainant had refused to pay money to the woman, the accused had threatened to drag the complainant to court.
During that time the complainant inquired whether a female magistrate with the name provided to him by the accused actually worked in any court in the city. He did not find anyone with the name. He then approached the police.
“It was another accused, 67-year-old Sunil Modi, a central Mumbai resident, who had prepared the fake stamps and court documents. We arrested him as well,” a police officer said.
The two accused were remanded in police custody till December 11. The two were booked for cheating and forgery under the IPC and identity theft under the IT Act.
Investigators learnt that Chavan, posing as a female magistrate, was also chatting with a bhel and samosa seller from Konkan. The bhelwallah could not understand that it was a fraud and ended up paying Rs 5,000 to the accused.
Th epolice said there were previous cheating cases against the two arrested men, who first met each other in jail two years ago.
