After M K Stalin's reprimand, MP apologises

NEW DELHI: A day after triggering a massive controversy with his disparaging remarks on north India while speaking in Lok Sabha, DMK MP DNV Senthilkumar apologised in the House and said he was withdrawing them.
“The statement made by me yesterday (was made) inadvertently. If it hurt the sentiments of the members and sections of the people, I would like to withdraw it.I request the words to be expunged and I express my regret,” Senthilkumar said in Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Kirit Premjibhai Solanki, who was in the chair, accepted the MP’s apology and declared the matter over.
Senthilkumar had triggered uproar in Parliament when he said BJP‘s appeal was limited to states that worship the cow. The remarks were later expunged by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
On Wednesday morning, Lok Sabha proceedings began with the treasury benches raising slogans of ‘maafi maango (apologise)”, which was followed by Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Arjun Ram Meghwal demanding that DMK’s leader in Lok Sabha T R Baalu apologise for the MP’s offensive comments.
“He (Baalu) should first apologise. He is their leader. The kind of remarks he made in this House! Balu should apologise first. How will the House function like this? How can any person say anything in this House and go?” Goyal said.
Amid the protests, Baalu clarified that DMK chief M K Stalin had reprimanded Senthilkumar and that the party did not endorse his statement. Baalu also announced that his colleague would apologise. The MP apologised soon after.
