MUMBAI: Almost a month after terminating the Rs 1,687 crore Cement Concrete (CC) road contract for south Mumbai, the BMC finally floated new CC road tenders for South Mumbai. The BMC’s estimated amount for the new tender (Rs 1,362 crore + 18% GST) is almost close to the previous contract that was terminated.
Opposing the BMC’s decision to float yet another mega tender, former BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar wrote to municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahaldemanding the BMC cancel this mega tender and float ward-wise smaller tenders for South Mumbai.Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray also slammed the BMC, asking how the cost of new tender has come down by Rs 300 crore.
Officials said as per the BMC schedule, bids will be opened by December-end and new work orders can only be given by early or mid January. Narwekar said this will give the BMC only five months of fair season to complete the work before the onset of monsoon in June next year.
“Almost a month after scrapping the CC road contract following my letters, BMC published an advertisement inviting bids for the CC roads for South Mumbai. I wrote a letter to the municipal commissioner expressing my strong opposition. I don’t see any possibility of completing the CC road works in South Mumbai before the arrival of the monsoon. So, the only solution is to split this mega tender into small ward-wise tenders to expedite completion of CC road works,” said Narwekar.
