Devika Ramani, a 23-year-old freelance fashion designer from Hatkeshwar, recently found herself entangled in this elaborate web.After posting her resume on a job portal, she received a message on December 7 from a textile and fashion designer company, dangling an annual salary between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 9 lakh.
The company lured the candidates, saying they could either work from home or the Ahmedabad office. The job seekers were asked to come for a walk-in interview at an office in Mondeal Heights in Ramdevnagar.
When Ramani arrived at the office, she saw some people working, and one of them asked her to meet the managerwho took her interview. “He asked a few general questions, including why I should be selected for the job of a fashion designer. While I was still giving my answer, he told me that I had been selected. I was told to fill out a form and pay money,” Ramani told TOI.
She said a man posing as an HR manager named Dev Dixit kept pressuring her to pay Rs 20,800 for a laptop and other logistic support.
Enticed by the offer of a monthly salary of around Rs 35,000 and incentives, Ramani paid the amount and was geared up to start her new job on Monday. However, when she showed up at the office, she discovered the entire setup was a ruse. “When I went there the next day, I was told that no such office operated in the commercial centre. A representative of a co-working space provider told me that the fraudsters had taken the office on rent for just four days,” she said.
Ramani isn’t the only victim. Approximately 200 people attended these fraudulent job interviews, said sources in the know. Many are yet to come forward and file police complaints. According to sources, several similar cases have surfaced in Ahmedabad city and district where job aspirants, mainly students, were targeted.
