Chennai runs out of space for garbage
About 20% of the garbage in Chennai consists of unusual solid waste like sofa sets and spare plastic parts. The city has seen a 50% increase in garbage collection after cyclone Michaung, leading to overflowing dumpsters. The lack of space at transfer stations has resulted in waste piling up on the roads in residential areas. Door-to-door collection delays have caused residents to dump waste on the streets. The damage caused by the floods has also affected waste management, with recycling centers not functioning properly. The corporation is focusing on removing waste from the roads before considering segregation or processing, and there is a suggestion to hire ragpickers to unclog the transfer stations and dumping yards.
