After clinching both the T20I and ODI series with a scoreline of 2-1, India are set to take on South Africa in a two-match Test series, with the first Test – the Boxing Day Test – slated to begin on December 26 at the SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium in Centurion, Gauteng.
The Test cricket history between these two sides dates back to almost three decades in 1992, when India had toured South Africa for a four-match Test series. The hosts won one Test with the other three resulting in draws.

The upcoming Test series will be an interesting one as it sees the return of veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohliand Jasprit Bumrah for India. Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada, on the other hand, are a part of the Protean squad after missing the white-ball leg.
India have been one of the best teams in the world in the last five years when it comes to Test cricket, making to the World Test Championship (WTC) in both the editions (2021 and 2023) so far. That they couldn’t win either final is a different story altogether.
However, it’s their ever-improving away record that has made India such a feared Test side as they currently sit at the top of the ICC Test Rankings.

India’s Test record in South Africa
Most of the talk in the build-up to the upcoming Test series has been India’s inability to taste much success in Test cricket on South African soil.
Indeed, the visitors haven’t won a single Test series in eight attempts in South Africa. India won their first-ever Test against South Africa in South Africa in December 2006 by 123 runs in Johannesburg, 14 years after they first toured them.
