Ahmedabad: The LD College of Engineering (LDCE) recently increased prices of meals served at its canteen by 27% which is being opposed by the students and student unions. According to students, the canteen has hiked meal prices from Rs 55 to Rs 70 which will put an additional financial burden on students, especially those who are staying in the hostel and are from poor financial backgrounds.
The students have demanded that the college administration should immediately withdraw the price hike, or they will start an agitation.
The students said that the LDCE hostel has students from across Gujarat and some are even from other states. Many of these students are from financially weaker sections and cannot afford to pay additional mess bills.
A delegation of members of National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party, led by regional president Narendra Solanki met the principal of the LDCE and demanded that the hike should be withdrawn immediately, and the old meal prices should be continued.
“For students, we have increased the price from Rs 55 per meal to Rs 60 so that the quality of food served to students doesn’t suffer because of the price rise in ingredients,” C S Sanghvi, the principal of LDCE, told TOI.
For others, the price has been increased from Rs 55 to Rs 70, said a source.

After students fall ill, govt looks for vendor who gives quality, right price
Nearly 70 students, suspected of food poisoning after eating at a meritorious school mess in Sangrur, were hospitalized. The district administration terminated the contract of the erring mess vendor and is now seeking a replacement. Finding a vendor who can provide meals at a cost of Rs 79.8 per student per day is proving to be a challenge. Vendors contacted so far have been unwilling due to the low cost. The school has been closed for four days, allowing time to find a new vendor. Sampling has also been done in other meritorious schools.
