Mother held for killing newborn in Mumbai | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Sion police have arrested a 23-year-old woman for allegedly dumping her newborn baby girl at Sion Hospital right after her delivery inside a hospital toilet “as the child was born out of wedlock”. The baby’s body was found in a dustbin inside a toilet cubicle. Police identified the woman after scouring the hospital’s CCTV footage.
Sion police arrested the mother, Rizwana alias Heena Malik, a resident of Dharavi, under Indian Penal Code sections 317 for exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 and 315 for an act done with the intent to a prevent a child being born alive or to cause it to die after birth.Police said they are exploring whether IPC Section 302 for murder can be invoked too. “She has not been coherent about how the baby died and who helped her in the delivery,” said Manisha Shirke, senior inspector of Sion police.
The baby’s body was found last Wednesday by a hospital staffer and the woman was arrested on Sunday.
