Mumbai: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday stayed ongoing work of building an anti-sea-erosion wall/bund at the Aksa beach in Mumbai. The bund work is already 95 per cent complete, said the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), which is executing the project.
The NGT interim order came on an application filed by B N Kumar and Zoru Bhathena, green activists, who said they had last year noticed “indiscriminate and unnecessary constructionwork’’ in the eco-fragile CRZ 1 lands of Aksa beach, Madh island region. The construction work titled ‘sea front development and beautification at Aksa Beach’ was commissioned by the MMB.
Senior advocate Gayatri Singh representing the activists sought orders to stop the work and revoke CRZ clearance granted for the project on ground including that the conditions of recommendations granted by Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) are being violated. The work is also obstructing tidal flow of water in an irreversible manner that will destroy the beach on the landward side, their plea said.
MMB lawyer Saket Mone submitted that the work of anti-sea erosion bund is otherwise permissible under the CRZ notification and that he submitted that the MCZMA “inadvertently added a condition in the clearance’’ whose deletion the MMB has sought.
The NGT directed the MCZMA to consider the MMB application for deletion in a time bound manner.
Mone said “It is ultimately a public project and Rs 12 crore has already been spent.’’ Bhathena said, “Though the majority work is done, this stay will ensure more work doesn’t get done.’’
