Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fires Rotten Tomatoes score is here, and the debut number sets an unfortunate record for Zack Snyder. Beginning life as a failed Star Wars pitch, Snyder’s latest film is a planet-hopping space opera adventure, chronicling a lone warrior’s attempts to rally the members of a peaceful farming colony against an evil galactic empire. The film marks Snyder’s second major collaboration with Netflix after 2021’s Army of the Dead.

Now, ahead of Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire‘s Netflix release date, Rotten Tomatoes reveals that the film has debuted to just 9%, with 22 reviews.

This marks the worst score of Snyder’s career, with Sucker Punch being the previous lowest at 22%. This score is likely to fluctuate, however, as more reviews are added.

Why Rebel Moon’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Is So Low

While Snyder has always been a divisive filmmaker critically, with his filmography covering a wide spectrum of scores on Rotten Tomatoes, Rebel Moon is one movie where most critics seem to agree that it really misses the mark. A central complaint in many of the reviews is, unfortunately, a lack of originality. It’s well-known at this point that Rebel Moon began as a Star Wars pitchbut reviews state that Snyder hasn’t done enough to differentiate the project from George Lucas’ creation.

It’s not just the film’s similarity to Star Wars that’s the problem, but critics claim in Rebel Moon reviews that it’s also derivative of a host of other movies. Snyder seemingly borrows so heavily from the likes of Seven Samurai, Avatar, Ghost in the Shell, Starship Troopers, Dune, and Game of Thrones, that his movie doesn’t bring anything new to the table.

According to critics, the film’s lack of originality accompanies weak characters, a predictable plot, poor pacing, and an overabundance of slow-motion action scenes. Like many “Part Ones,” the consensus seems to be that the movie also serves as an over-long setup for the sequel. It must be said, however, that Snyder has a passionate fan following, and the Rotten Tomatoes audience score for his films typically outweighs the critics’ score. With a wide Netflix release only a few days away, it won’t be long before audiences share their own thoughts on Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.
