NEW DELHI: Incidents of rioting in Assam and Uttar Pradesh dipped by 80% and 50% respectively between 2018 and 2022, even as Chhattisgarh recorded an over 44% jump, latest crime data compiled by the NCRB showed.
Countrywide, incidents of rioting – including communal, sectarian, political, industrial and caste-based – saw a 34% dip between 2018 and 2022. Communal riots in particular fell 28% to 272 in 2022 from 378 in 2021, with MP accounting for 68 incidents of communal or religious rioting in 2022, Bihar 60 and Jharkhand 46. UP saw no communal riot in 2022.Kerala accounted for the highest political riots in the country last year, having witnessed 301 such incidents. Odisha reported 224 and Maharashtra 86.
A state-wise comparison of crime data between 2018 and 2022 showed that while all-India murder cases declined, murders in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh saw a jump of 21.6% and 10.5% respectively. In contrast, UP saw a decline of more than 10% in murder cases.
The highest increase in crimes against women in the last five years was in Rajasthan (61.7%) and TN (58.1%). While there was a 5.5% all-India decline in rape cases from 2018 to 2022, the rate of decline was far higher in Assam (32.5%) and MP (44.2%). On the other hand, Bihar saw an increase of 35.3% in heinous rape cases, as did Telangana (34.3%) and Rajasthan (24.5%).
West Bengal accounted for one-fourth, or 31 of the country’s 124 acid attacks.
Assam, which has a Scheduled Caste (SC) population of 22.3 lakh, did not see a single incident of rape against an SC person, while Kerala witnessed 192 rape cases against SCs. The highest rise in crimes against SCs was in Rajasthan, at over 90% in five years.
Crimes against Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the last five years rose by over 346% in TN, 130% in Rajasthan and 128% in Bihar. This contributed to the all-India rise of 54.2% in crimes against STs.
