    Rs 561 crore Central project to help Chennai fight floods | India News

    NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the ministry of home affairs to release in advance the second instalment of the Centre’s contribution to the SDRF of Rs 493.60 crore to Andhra Pradesh and Rs 450 crore to Tamil Nadu in view of the floods caused by cyclone Michaung, Union minister Amit Shah said. In a post on X, Shah said the PM has approved the first urban flood mitigation project of Rs 561.29 crore for ‘Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project’ under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF), which also includes central assistance of Rs 500 crore.
    6 more deaths in Chennai, Michaung toll rises to 33
    The death toll from cyclone Michaung reached 33 across 3 states on Thursday, with an additional six confirmed fatalities in Chennai. While many parts of the city returned to normalcy, several suburban neighbourhoods remained waterlogged, leaving residents stranded in submerged homes, pleading for water and food.The toll stood at 27 on Wednesday. with five and two deaths reported in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, respectively. The remaining casualties occurred in Chennai and its adjacent districts, where relentless rain battered the region on Sunday and Monday as Michaung approached. The cyclone made landfall at Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday afternoon and then curved northwards, sparing Chennai a direct hit.
    Defence minister Rajnath Singh conducted an aerial survey of Chennai on Thursday and met CM MK Stalin. Singh announced Rs 561.29 crore for integrated urban flood management activities for the Chennai basin project. (With agency inputs)
