Telangana election results: Congress marginally ahead of K Chadrasekhar Rao's BRS in early leads | India News

NEW DELHI: The Congress has taken early leads in Telangana over the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, which is hoping for a third consecutive term in the state. The Telangana election resultswill be important for the Congress as it heads into the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. A win here would further consolidate its presence in the South after victory in Karnataka. The grand old party which has promised 6 guarantees to the people of the state had led a spirited campaign to woo voters.
Almost all the exit polls have predicted a comfortable lead for the Congress in the state with chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao likely to lose his hold after 10 years of rule. The BJP and the AIMIM are likely to remain in single digits, according to the exit polls.
In the 2018 assembly elections, KCR had got a resounding mandate winning 88 of the 119 seats in the state. The Congress on the other hand could win only 21.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed several meetings during the campaign period, besides a roadshow in Hyderabad on Monday amid huge fanfare while KCR spoke at 96 rallies, during the high-octane campaign.
The BJP’s campaign highlighted the necessity of a “double engine government”, “family rule” of KCR and alleged corruption, besides promising to make a Backward Caste leader the CM.
The BRS campaign centred on the previous Congress regime’s failures and ongoing welfare measures for farmers and women. Rao also highlighted his struggle to achieve Telangana statehood.
The Congress focused mainly on the alleged corruption of the BRS government while highlighting its “six guarantees” and a need for a “change” in regime.
A voter turnout of 71.34 per cent of the eligible 3.26 crore electors was recorded in elections to the 119-member legislative assembly on November 30 which passed off peacefully, barring a few minor incidents.
