White-Topped Road: Jodhpur Residents See Red Over New White-topped Road, Call It Rainwater Trap | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) ambitious project to white-top a road in Satellite area seems to have created more problems than convenience. It’s been few days since Prerna Tirth Road has been dug up and a new concrete layer laid on top of the existing road. Traders in Jodhpur ward are up in arms against the now-elevated road, fearing that this will create a rainwater trap and inundate their shops and societies during monsoon.
The Prerna Tirth Road, which is currently undergoing white-topping, has seen a significant rise in its level, leaving one lane higher than the entrance of surrounding properties. “The road has become so high that water will enter our shops and societies. This is not what we had desired,” lamented a local trader who fears his establishment may be affected. “We had hoped the white-topping project would solve the waterlogging issue, but it seems to have created a new one,” he added, requesting anonymity.
AMC’s white-topping initiative was, launched in August 2022, and was aimed at revamping the city’s roads with a durable surface. The civic body aims to revitalize 33km of roads in western Ahmedabad at a cost of Rs 180 crore.
The civic body had initially identified 96 roads for white topping, but only 43 in the city’s western parts were approved. Six of these are currently under construction, including the Prerna Tirth Road.
AMC’s decision to dig up existing roads and resurface them with white tops was met with scepticism. White topping is a method of construction that involves laying a concrete layer over the existing asphalt layer. This results in a more durable and longer lasting road.
The AMC has relaid one road in Gurukul using the white topping method. As per Indian Roads Congress guidelines, tie bars are supposed to be put while concreting the slabs to ensure grip. It is done to increase structural strength, say AMC officials.
