Year-End Travellers: Year-end travellers see air fares take steep ascent | Ahmedabad | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: The end of the year is near, and many from the city plan to ring in the new year with a short escapade to a serene shore or a quiet, snowy hillside. With travel plans in place about 25 days before New Year’s Eve (NYE), air fares have soared northwards for domestic and international destinations.
For instance, a return flight to Goa between December 29 (Friday) and January 2 (Tuesday) costs around Rs 20,000 per person.A couple travelling to Goa will end up shelling out around Rs 40,000 on air travel alone. Similarly, direct return flights to international destinations like Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City) and Thailand (Bangkok), generally priced around Rs 40,000 per person, are 64-160% higher than usual.
On average, flight tickets to popular holiday destinations cost about 80-100% more than normal fares for the NYE weekend.
Popular domestic destinations include Udaipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, Manali in Himachal Pradesh, Kochi and Munnar in Kerala, Goa, and Kashmir.
Direct flights to major cities in Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia have also fuelled increased air traffic to these destinations, especially over the NYE weekend. “Demand is high from NRIs, honeymoon couples, youngsters, and families travelling by themselves,” said a travel operator from Ahmedabad.
Vacationing at any destination will certainly be a costly affair this season as hotel tariffs have also shot up by 25 to 50%, according to estimates by the Travel Agents’ Association of India (TAAI). “Air fares and accommodation costs are quite high, so there will be fewer last-minute bookings this time. People who have planned their holidays will leave around Christmas and return after New Year’s Day. However, many people have booked a short getaway either on NYE weekend or Christmas weekend,” said Virendra Shah, chairman of TAAI Gujarat.
