New Delhi: America is also well aware of how strong the friendship between India and Russia is. It also knows that only India can make Russia understand. This is the reason why America has been continuously appealing to India since PM Modi’s visit to Russia. America has again appealed to India and said that India should use its relations with Russia and ask Putin to end the Ukraine war. Even when Modi was on a visit to Russia, America had appealed to Putin to persuade him to end the Ukraine war.
Amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the US has again urged India to take advantage of its old relations with Russia and ask President Vladimir Putin to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said this in a press conference on Monday. He mentioned the strong Delhi-Moscow relations and also urged India to ask Putin to respect the United Nations Charter.
What did America request?
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, ‘Look, India has a very old relationship with Russia. I think this is not hidden from anyone. And we – on behalf of America – have been requesting India to use this old relationship and its special position with Russia. So that India asks Russian President Putin to end this war and move towards a just peace, a lasting peace. Also, ask Vladimir Putin to respect the Charter of the United Nations, respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.’
America’s comment on Modi’s visit
He further said, ‘We will continue to emphasize this with the Government of India. The Government of India is an important partner of ours in terms of relations with Russia.’ In fact, Miller made this comment in response to a media question on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Russia. At the same time, Ukrainian President Zelensky had described PM Modi’s visit as a big setback for peace efforts. Let us tell you that recently PM Modi went to Moscow on an official visit. Where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both the leaders outlined their goals of making mutual trade more than US $ 100 billion by 2030 and removing non-tariff trade barriers.
America has made the same appeal earlier too
Earlier also America had made a similar request. When Modi was on a visit to Russia, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre had said, ‘We believe that India has a long-standing and good relationship with Russia. This is what gives India the ability to tell President Putin that Russia should somehow end the Ukraine war. India is a strategic partner of ours with whom we have full and frank dialogue, including on their relations with Russia and we have talked about this earlier as well. It is important that all countries including India support the efforts to realize a lasting and just peace in the case of Ukraine. It is President Putin’s job to end this war. President Putin started the war and only he can end this war.’
