New Delhi. These days, neighboring country Bangladesh is burning in the fire of anti-reservation violence. Its heat is also being felt in West Bengal on the border. Its political heat has started reaching West Bengal bordering Bangladesh. In a rally on Sunday, CM Mamata Banerjee gave such a statement, after which politics has heated up. Actually, CM Mamata Banerjee said that her doors are open for the victims of the ongoing violence in the neighboring country and she is ready to give them shelter in West Bengal. After that, there has been a political earthquake. Now the big question is whether the states have the right to give shelter to refugees coming from another country?
Hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered to provide shelter to people stranded in Bangladesh, sources connected to the central government said that the state administration has no right to interfere in this issue. Sources said that these matters come under the central government. Also, CM Mamata Banerjee’s remarks were termed completely inappropriate. In her address at a rally in Kolkata, CM Mamata Banerjee, referring to violence-hit Bangladesh, said that she would keep the doors of West Bengal open for people stranded in distress from the neighboring country and give them shelter. Now a source in the central government said, ‘These are matters which the central government looks into.’
‘CM Mamata’s comment is wrong’
A source associated with the center said, ‘The state government has no authority on this issue (shelter to refugees) and hence her comments (CM Mamata Banerjee) are completely wrong.’ CM Mamata Banerjee had mentioned the United Nations resolution on refugees in support of her statement. In the last few days, the law and order situation in Bangladesh has deteriorated and due to this there is a possibility of a humanitarian crisis there. CM Banerjee said, ‘I should not speak on the affairs of Bangladesh, because it is a sovereign nation and whatever should be said on this issue is a matter of the Center.’
‘We will definitely support them…’
At the Trinamool Congress’ ‘Shaheed Diwas’ rally, CM Mamata Banerjee said, “I can tell you that if helpless people knock on the door of Bengal, we will definitely give them shelter.” Demonstrations have been going on for several days in Bangladesh demanding reforms in the reservation system in government jobs and curfew was imposed across the country on Saturday when the situation worsened. Military forces patrolled various parts of the national capital Dhaka. The protesters are demanding the abolition of the system of giving up to 30 percent reservation in government jobs to relatives of former soldiers who fought in Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
