New Delhi: Doctor G movie review in Hindi: Ayushmann Khurrana and Rakul Preet Singh starrer film ‘Doctor G’ has been released in theatres today. For some time now, Hindi cinema has been facing accusations like lack of content, only making remakes. But when it comes to content, expectations from Ayushmann Khurrana are always very high. After the trailer of this film, the audience had high expectations from this film of Ayushmann. Shefali Shah’s entry in the trailer also increased the craze among the fans. Ayushmann Khurrana’s Doctor G has once again brought a subject in front of the audience, which has probably never been touched on screen before. Let us tell you with how many marks this Doctor G passes in the cinema class.
Story- The story of this film is of Bhopal resident Uday Gupta (Ayushmann Khurana) who has completed MBBS and now wants to take admission in PG. He wants to take Orthopaedics (department related to bones) in PG, but due to his low rank he does not get a seat in Ortho, instead he gets a place in Gynecology i.e. Obstetrics and Gynecology department. Uday wants to take admission in Orthopaedics at any cost because it is a subject suitable for ‘men’, whereas admission in Gynecology makes him feel embarrassed. His senior in this department is Fatima (Rakulpreet Singh), whom he also falls in love with. This is Uday’s struggle and in this struggle, his HOD is Dr. Nandini (Shefali Shah) who is enduring the troubles he is facing in the department by advising him to end ‘male-touch’.
First of all, if we talk about the concept of the film, I would like to praise Anubhuti Kashyap who is sitting in the director’s chair and has tried to bring this bold medical comedy drama on screen. Actually Although this film is set in a medical college, where the hero wants admission in the male ortho and not the female gynecology department, this story depicts the thinking of men towards women and the attempt to divide many jobs and professions into ‘male and female’. In one scene, the hero of the film is asked what is his problem in getting a ‘gynaecologist’. He says, ‘I have seen boys playing cricket and girls playing badminton in my locality. Now how can I play badminton, friend…’ In this way, many things in the society have been divided into ‘for women’ and ‘for men’.
Ayushman Khurana has suited his role very well in this film as well. For years, in the name of romance, cinema has been serving the idea that ‘a boy and a girl can never be friends…’, for the first time it has been shown that ‘just like two boys can be friends, girls can be friends, similarly a boy and a girl can also be just friends. In many films including ‘Pyaar Ka Panchnama’, an attempt has been made to establish the ‘truth’ that a girl’s friendship with a boy is to ‘fulfill her needs which are not fulfilled by her boyfriend sitting far away.’ But this film tries to break this age-old concept of yours. But the flaw in this film with such a necessary and important concept is that it becomes very slow in doing both of these things. Especially this second matter.
From the very first scene of the film, you get the idea that this hero is such a man for whom it is difficult to understand a woman. But this thing has been repeated so many times that you start finding Uday more correct. There are many scenes in this film when you feel that perhaps something else will be said, something else will be spoken, but the scenes end. Uday, who has been thinking for years, cannot miraculously understand everything on his own just by playing badminton. Ayushmann Khurrana has been bringing very bold subjects and stories on screen even before this. Whether it is homosexuality or a film based on male weakness, the factor of comedy and entertainment remains very high in all of Ayushmann’s films. Perhaps this is the reason why the bold subjects fed by him do not seem bitter to the audience. You will hardly find any moments of laughter in Doctor G. This is a medical comedy drama but there is too much medical drama and drama in it and the comedy is missing. The first half of the film is still light but the story takes a complete turn in the second half. The film also becomes a bit heavy in the second half.
Shefali Shah has played the head of the gynecology department in this film.
Talking about performance, as always Ayushmann Khurrana has been completely fit and amazing in his role. Often the hero of our films keeps a lot of emotional drama in his backstory even after doing the worst of things, so that he never looks wrong even after being wrong. But this actor has an amazing art of making his character a ‘hero’ on screen with its shortcomings and connecting it with the audience. Shefali Shah has been amazing in the role of HOD. Her dialogues, her style are superb. Whenever Shefali has come on screen, you will not be able to feel the presence of anyone else on screen except her. On the other hand, Sheeba Chaddha’s role as Ayushmann’s mother has been fun. In fact, if you will laugh due to the presence of anyone in the entire film, then it is Sheeba. Rakulpreet has looked good in her scenes.
Doctorji is a slow-paced story with a brilliant concept, in which the actors have left no stone unturned in their acting. The only thing is that this story has not been told in the sharp way it should have been. You should definitely watch this film at least once. 3 stars for this film from me.
