North Western Railway installed 11 thousand bio toilets in its trains, appeals to passengers to keep the toilets clean

Jodhpur. Indian Railways is continuously working for environmental protection and cleanliness. It is installing bio toilets in trains with the help of DRDO. About 11000 bio toilets have been installed in the coaches of all passenger trains of North Western Railway.

North Western Railway started this work in 2013 with the technical support of Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The purpose was cleanliness on trains and railway tracks. Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, Captain Shashi Kiran said that with the use of bio-toilets, the coach maintenance staff also gets relief from dirt and stench while working in the under frame under the coach.

Bio Toilet Upgrade
According to Captain Shashi Kiran, efforts are being made to upgrade these biotoilets from time to time. For example, the “P” trap has been changed to “S” trap, which creates a water seal in the toilets due to which there is no problem of bad odor. Along with this, ventilation has also been arranged. Trained staff has been kept in moving vehicles so that problems can be solved immediately. Dustbins have also been arranged in the toilets so that the garbage is disposed of properly. The biotoilets do not get choked. Labs have also been set up at various places to test the biotoilets.

Appeal to passengers
Railways has appealed to the passengers to use these toilets properly. Cooperate with the railways in keeping them clean. Passengers should not throw newspapers, napkins, bottles, plastic, polybags, cloth, gutkha pouches, tea cups and other garbage in these bio-toilets. If necessary, use the dustbin kept in the toilet.
-Be sure to flush the toilet after using it. Do not dirty the toilet.
-Be a responsible citizen, help the Railways in the fight against filth.

What is a bio toilet
Now the question arises what is a bio-toilet and how does it work. In a bio-toilet, with the help of bacterial inoculum, solid human waste is converted into bio-gas and water. From time to time, as per the requirement, when the quantity reduces, these bacteria are put in the bio tank. The remaining water of the bio-toilet is colorless, odorless and devoid of any solid particles. No other treatment/waste management is required for this. By using a bio-toilet, waste material and water does not fall on the railway line. Due to this, the tracks do not rust and do not become dirty. This increases the quality and life of the railway track.
