New Delhi. In 2007, a murder case came to light in South Delhi. The body of a 22-year-old girl was found in a trunk. The main accused involved in the crime managed to escape from the scene. The deceased was brought to Delhi from West Bengal as part of prostitution. Due to the persistence of a sub-inspector of Delhi Police, this deceased has got justice after 17 years. The 57-year-old accused who was roaming freely for so many years has been caught. SI Ramesh was on the post of ASI in the year 2007.

Crime Branch DCP Amit Goyal said, ‘Ramesh, posted at Kalkaji police station, was the beat officer where the woman was murdered. Usually, after transfer from the area, policemen start investigating new cases but Ramesh continued the investigation of this case informally. He again started collecting information about the accused through those who were directly or indirectly involved in prostitution. He came to know that Singh was hiding in Panipat, Haryana. Raids were conducted but the accused could not be traced as he was changing his rented house frequently.’

Transfer to crime branch…
In February this year, Ramesh was transferred to the Crime Branch. Now he could also investigate the case directly. The DCP said, “This time he was able to find the mobile number of the accused and he was identified from the database of tenants. He was arrested from Vijay Vihar area of ​​​​Rohini.” Police said that the accused Virendra Singh, a resident of Vaishali district of Bihar, killed a 22-year-old woman in his rented apartment here in 2007 and locked the body in a trunk. The woman’s body was found the next day.

Why did the driver turn into a broker?
Amit Goyal said, “After killing her, the accused fled from the city. However, during the investigation, co-accused Shankar Ghosh was arrested by the local police. In 2008, the court declared him a proclaimed offender.” During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused came to Delhi in 1991 and started living in Chittaranjan Park area. He used to work as a taxi driver. During that time, he came in contact with different people and also came to know about prostitution. The DCP said that in 2001 he got involved in prostitution to earn easy money. He used to bring young girls from West Bengal and use them in prostitution.

Did he commit murder over such a small matter?
According to the police, he had bought the victim for Rs 10,000. On June 4, 2007, when the victim refused to go to work due to illness, the accused allegedly killed her. He locked the body in a trunk, hid the trunk in his rented accommodation and fled to West Bengal. In 2009, he came to Ambala and got involved in prostitution with his friend Labhu. In 2013, he moved to Panipat and continued the same business. He returned to Delhi in 2019 and started living in Vijay Vihar.”
