Mexico City. Mexicans will elect what is likely to be the first female president in the country’s history on Sunday. Two of the three candidates for the presidency this time are women – one a former academic who has promised to carry forward the current leader’s populist policies and the other a former senator and tech entrepreneur who has promised to tackle drug gangs.

Both the main candidates for the post of President are women and one of them is likely to be elected President. The third candidate is Jorge Alvarez Menez who is said to be far behind. There are about 10 crore registered voters in the country to elect a new President to replace outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The female candidates include Claudia Sheinbaum and Xochitl Galvez Ruiz. Sheinbaum is a member of the Morena party and has promised to carry forward the populist policies of the current leader. Xochitl Galvez Ruiz is an outspoken former senator and businesswoman. She has promised to tackle gangs involved in drug trafficking.
