Dressed in a red and gold silk pavadai (skirt) and holding an electric guitar, 10-year-old Maya Neelakantan took to the stage at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles in March to audition for America’s Got Talent (AGT), one of television’s biggest reality shows. When she took the stage, little did she know that a 10-year-old would set the stage on fire. Maya began her performance with an intricate alaap in the grand devotional raga Natabhairavi.
