Be it a small employee or a big officer, and even politicians, they try their best to increase their salary. They don’t care if this will increase inflation. The burden on the government treasury will increase. They only care about their earnings. But the President of the African country Liberia, Joseph Boakai, has emerged as an example for such people. Seeing the country struggling with inflation, he himself has announced to reduce his salary by 40%.
Inflation is at its peak in Liberia and people are living with great difficulty. One out of every five people is living on less than Rs 150 per day. Many people do not even have money to buy daily necessities. In view of this, President Joseph Boakai decided to reduce his salary himself. Earlier his annual salary was $13400 i.e. Rs 11.50 lakh. Now his salary will be reduced to $8,000 i.e. about Rs 6.67 lakh. George Weah, who was the president before Boakai, had also announced a cut in his salary. He had reduced his salary by 25 percent.
Some people are still not happy
The people of Liberia are very happy with this decision of their leader. However, some people are still raising questions. They say that this is not a renunciation. The President still gets many benefits like daily wages and medical cover. This year’s budget of the President’s office is about 3 million dollars. Talking to BBC, Anderson D. Miamen, a member of Liberia’s organization Center of Transparency and Accountability, said, this decision of the President to reduce his salary is welcome. We hope that the public will understand this and think about where to use this money.
Stopping corruption and wasteful expenditure
Along with cutting his own salary, President Boakai has announced a strengthening of Liberia’s civil service agency to ensure that officials receive fair salaries. Just last week, some MPs complained that they did not have government cars. To protest, they arrived at parliament in tuk-tuks. When Boakai took office in January, he vowed to tackle government corruption. One of the first things he announced was to make his assets public. He also strengthened the General Auditing Commission and the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission. He stopped corruption and wasteful spending.
