It is said that after Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites made internet available to them, a Marubo tribe in the Amazon rainforest has now become addicted to watching obscene movies and scrolling social media sites. Not only this, the local people of the Marubo tribes living in scattered settlements along the Itui River in Brazil are also increasingly becoming victims of online fraud. In the initial phase, the people of this tribe used the internet very well and also understood its importance. They immediately realized that through the internet, one can contact family and friends even while staying far away. But gradually the people here were surrounded by another problem.
Actually, because of the internet, people here have started becoming lazy. The elderly people of Marubo say that the people of their community are no longer interested in work. They are always glued to their phones. The youth have become addicted to dirty movies as well as obscene scrolling on social media sites like Instagram. 40-year-old Enoke Marubo told New York Times reporters that our daily routine is changing completely because of the internet. People do not want to work. In such a situation, if these people do not hunt, do not catch fish, do not plant trees, then how will they eat food?
Alfredo Marubo, another member of the tribe, told how watching dirty films has changed the sexual behavior of local people, especially young men and women. These people have now started sharing obscene pictures and explicit videos in group chats. Another person said that when the Internet came among us, we were all happy, but now the situation is getting worse. People here are abandoning our tradition and adopting the ways of the outside world, which is not right at all. However, he admitted that now it is very difficult to live without the Internet, but people should not misuse it.
