Texas NASA has issued an alert about an asteroid coming towards Earth at a high speed. NASA said, ‘A 150 feet (46 meters) sized asteroid named NS1-2024 has been seen coming towards Earth.’ The space agency said that this asteroid is moving towards our Earth at a dangerous speed of 27,274 km/hour. This asteroid, the size of an airplane, will pass very close to Earth on August 2 at 5:35 pm Indian time. NASA has expressed concern that what will happen if this asteroid collides with the Earth?
NASA classified this asteroid NS1-2024 as Apollo. NASA does this based on the asteroid’s size, speed and the threat it poses to Earth. It is part of a group of near-Earth objects (NEOs), whose orbits often cross the Earth’s path around the Sun. Even though many NEOs do not come very close to Earth, there are some that pass so close that the agencies monitoring them and scientists start fearing the danger to Earth, due to which such dangerous asteroids have to be kept under special surveillance.

Is there danger?
Some asteroids are larger than 460 feet (140 meters) and they reach a distance of 7.5 million kilometers from the Earth. However, since this asteroid NS1- 2024 is not very dangerous, it will pass at a safe distance of about 2 million kilometers from the Earth. Its size is only 150 feet, so it is not considered very dangerous for the Earth, if its size was 140 to 150 meters and it had passed very close to the Earth, it could have caused a lot of destruction.
