One product created a buzz
Although Jyoti Lab makes dozens of products today, but one product of the company earned so much fame that its name was on everyone’s lips. Today the company makes many products from dish bar to detergent, but the clothes whitener released under the name Ujala made its mark in every household. You must remember its ‘Ujala four drops’ advertisement. In the 2000s, this product was found applied on every white cloth.

Every attempt failed
Ramachandran, who lives in Thrissur district of Kerala, started working as an accountant after completing B.Com and PG from St. Thomas College. But, he always wanted to start his own business. He started it and started trying to make laundry whitener. After trying several times from his kitchen, he did not get success.

Got the idea from a magazine
Finally, Ramachandran came across a magazine of the chemical industry in which it was written about making clothes bright and white by using purple dye. Then Ramachandran left everything and started making dye. He spent a whole year in making purple dye and finally got hold of the formula which was going to change his fate.

Took loan from brother and started business
In 1983, Ramachandran borrowed Rs 5000 from his brother and set up a small factory on his land. He started the business in the name of his daughter and thus Jyoti Lab was established.
