UP Board Result 2019: Once she was given only 1.25 acres of barren land and was taunted that her children are growing up from the earnings of her brothers-in-law. Today the same Santosh Devi is earning 25 lakh rupees annually from the same 1.25 acres of land. This is the story of Santosh Devi Khedar and her husband Ram Karan Khedar, who run Shekhawati Farm in Beri village of Sikar district of Rajasthan and are honoured with the title of agricultural scientist.
Rajasthan Santosh Devi was born in Kolsiya village of Jhunjhunu district of Uttar Pradesh. Her father was in Delhi Police. He wanted both his daughters to study in Delhi. But Santosh was not interested in studies. Somehow she studied in Delhi till class 5, then her mind started going towards the village. As soon as she came back to the village, Santosh learnt all the tricks of farming. By the time she was 12 years old, Santosh knew everything that a farmer should know.

In 1990, 15-year-old Santosh was married to Ram Karan and her younger sister was married to Ram Karan’s younger brother. In Ram Karan’s joint family, his other two brothers were in good jobs, so he and Santosh started managing the family’s 5-acre farm. In 2005, Santosh’s husband Ram Karan got a job as a home guard, but the salary was only Rs 3000. It was difficult to make ends meet with this.

Where Ram Karan worked as a home guard, someone had suggested him to plant pomegranates a long time ago. Santosh remembered this and decided to act on this suggestion. First of all, Santosh Devi bought 220 pomegranate saplings and planted them in her field. Santosh Devi used the drip system for its irrigation. This gave her a profit of Rs 3 lakh in the year 2011.
Seeing the success of the Khedar family, the nearby farmers were also very impressed and they also wanted to grow pomegranate. But since most of the farmers did not get success in this, they would come to Santosh Devi for help. Santosh Devi would also tell them all the methods she had learned from her experiences, in this way ‘Shekhawati Krishi Farm and Nursery Garden Research Center’ was started in 2013. Santosh Devi told that this year she has sold about 15000 saplings, which has given her an additional income of 10-15 lakhs.
