With the cold and cosy Christmas season come the Carol services of Madurai churches which get better every year with the prophetic end times getting nearer. There were carol services of the choir at CSI Webb Memorial Church in the morning and by the YWCA at the Jubilee Chapel of The American College in the evening on Sunday.

The Webb choir rendered ‘Go to Him in Bethlehem,’ ‘Come thou long expected,’ a medley comprising Handel’s Messiah, besides the timeless carols – ‘Joy to the World,’ O come all ye faithful’ and ‘Silent Night,’ and a few songs in Tamil, sung by the junior choir and the congregation. The keyboard was played by Honey Beautlyn, and also by two boys – Haniel and Daniel, while Carol played the violin. The Choir Director was Samuel Thomas.

Rev. J. John Jeya Kamaraj, the Chaplain of The American College, who started his Christmas message with a FMPB song, said that from the ‘Jews and Jehovah,’ how the birth of Jesus gave the blessed assurance of eternal life to one and all. He is the sole Christmas gift, he said and outlined how one forfeits three things – His image (glory), presence and peace – through sin and worldliness. He cautioned the congregation on the present day shallow preachings of salvation without repentance.

The YWCA senior choir rendered ‘Once in royal David’s city,’ ‘Love came down at Christmas’ the Coventry carol – ‘Lully , lulla, thou little tiny child, ‘When the angel came to Mary,’ ‘Of all the sons of Judah’ and “Laying aside  all the glory of heaven.’ The children’s choir sang “Let it be Christmas everywhere’ and ‘The angels echoed through the sky. The context and importance of the lyrics was explained before every song which accentuated the good news.

The piano was by Stanley Joshua and the Choir Director was Daniel Dawson. Beulah Jeyashree, Principal of Lady Doak College, in her Christmas message, explained the theme of the evening, ‘Joy and wonder,’ through the bible characters of Mary, Elizabeth and Hannah, and how these chosen vessels did not keep the joy and wonder to themselves but sacrificed them for the betterment of humanity.
