There is news of relief for crores of customers using mobile phones. TRAI has changed the recharge rules. It has been made mandatory to make special plans for customers using voice calls and SMS. Now customers will not have to pay for internet if they do not use it. That is, you will have to pay only for the service you use. The validity of special recharge voucher has been increased from 90 days to 365 days. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued Telecom Consumer Protection (12th Amendment) Regulations 2024. Under these new rules, telecom operators will now offer tariff plans with only voice calls and SMS benefits for these customers.
2G users will benefit
This change will be especially beneficial for 2G users and those who keep one SIM only for voice calls and SMS. Nearly 150 million 2G users will now pay only for the services they use. Till now, 2G users had to buy expensive plans which included data benefits which were not necessary for them.
Validity of special tariff voucher extended
TRAI has also increased the validity of Special Tariff Voucher (STV) from 90 days to 365 days. These vouchers are cheaper and offer more benefits than regular plans. Apart from this, telecom operators have also been instructed to provide top-up vouchers starting from Rs 10.
Operators will be affected
This may affect Airtel and Vodafone-Idea (Vi), which provide 2G networks, while Jio provides only 4G and 5G services. At the same time, to increase their revenue, telecom companies focus more on bundled plans with data, calling, SMS and OTT benefits. According to TRAI, these changes have been made keeping in mind the convenience and needs of the customers. This decision has been taken on the basis of survey and feedback from stakeholders.
