Govinda’s fan following was as big as it was in the 90s. Not even that much of Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan. Govinda had given more hit films in a year than many actors were able to give in their career. At one time he signed 75 films. Kept working on the set for two weeks continuously. Due to which he fell ill, but seeing his passion towards work, it seemed that now no one can stop him.
Today, Govinda’s name is in place of Shahrukh and Salman, but as the 21st decade came, Govinda’s films started flopping continuously. A lot of controversy had started against him. There came a time when the availability of films stopped. The films which were ready could not reach the theatre. After all, what is the real reason behind Govinda’s downfall?

Inherited acting but still had to work hard
Govinda’s father Arun Kumar Ahuja was a famous artist of his time. He had worked in 30-40 films. Whereas, Govinda’s mother Nirmala Devi was a classical singer, who used to sing songs for films. Despite having a film background, Govinda made a distinct identity for himself in the industry after a lot of struggle. He made his acting debut with the film ‘Love 86’. This film was a superhit and made Govinda an overnight star.
Dilip Kumar advised to leave 25 films
After the debut film, Govinda started getting offers for many films. At the age of 21, he signed 75 films. Once he did not sleep for 16 days, as he was working on the set for two weeks continuously. Due to which he used to fall ill on the set and due to continuous work, he often had to go to the hospital. In a podcast interview with Manish Paul, Govinda had said- Dilip Kumar Sahab had advised me to leave 25 films. He advised that it is important to stay healthy.
14 films released in one year
Govinda has done more than 165 films in his career. Govinda’s star was very high in the 80’s and 90’s. At that time, every film he appeared in proved to be a blockbuster at the box office. There came a phase in his career when 14 of his films were released consecutively in a year. It was said about Govinda that he used to give competition to all the three Khans of Bollywood at that time.
Had left the film for Salman Khan
When Govinda’s career was at its peak, he left the film ‘Judwaa’ for Salman Khan. Govinda himself had revealed this during an interview. Govinda had said- At that time my career was at its peak. During the days when the shooting of ‘Judwaa’ was going on, once at around 2-3 in the night I got a call from Salman.
He said Chi Chi Bhaiya, how many more hits will you give? I asked him why what happened? He said, ‘Please leave the ‘Judwaa’ film you are shooting now and give it to me. Along with the film, you will also have to provide its director and producer. Govinda gave that film to Salman Khan, but there came a phase in his career when his films started flopping continuously. Govinda started feeling that a conspiracy was being hatched against him.
Sunil reached out to Shetty to ask for work
When Govinda was returning to films after becoming disillusioned with politics, Sunil approached Shetty to ask for work. Actually, Sunil Shetty was producing the film ‘Bhagambhaag’. He himself was going to play the character of ‘Babla’ in this film. When Govinda came to know that Sunil Shetty was producing the film, he went to Sunil Shetty and asked him to give him work in this film. Because they are in dire need of work. Sunil Shetty gave his role to Govinda in Yaari Dosti. Akshay Kumar and Govinda were seen for the first time in this film.
Salman had paid off his debt by working in ‘Partner’
Salman Khan’s film ‘Partner’ was produced by his brother Sohail Khan along with Parag Sanghvi. When Govinda’s career was at its peak, he left the film ‘Judwaa’ for Salman Khan. When Govinda’s downfall came, Salman asked his brother Sohail to choose Govinda as his ‘partner’.
However, at that time the relations between Govinda and the film’s director David Dhawan were not good. After ‘Partner’, relations between Salman and Govinda deteriorated. Actually, Govinda wanted Salman to launch his daughter Tina Ahuja in the film ‘Dabangg’, but instead of launching Tina in the film, Salman launched Sonakshi Sinha. From here the relationship between Govinda and Salman Khan started deteriorating.
For this reason David Dhawan had distanced himself from Govinda
Govinda did 17 films with David Dhawan, most of which were hits. Then what happened that David Dhawan had distanced himself from Govinda? Actually, during the shooting of the film ‘Ek Aur Ek Gyarah’, Govinda did not like a scene. Govinda talked to David Dhawan about this and expressed his view that if some changes are made in this scene, then the scene can become better and more effective.
David Dhawan did not like what Govinda said
David Dhawan did not like what Govinda said and he refused to make changes. Then Sanjay Dutt also came there. When Sanjay Dutt came to know about the matter between Govinda and David, he also intervened and took David Dhawan’s side and justified him. This matter touched Govinda’s heart and he also became angry with Sanjay Dutt. David Dhawan did not like this action of Govinda and he distanced himself from Govinda.
David Dhawan said tell Govinda to do small roles
After leaving politics, Govinda was looking to re-establish himself in Bollywood. He tried many times to meet David Dhawan, but could not meet David Dhawan. Then he sent his secretary to David. What David said about Govinda touched his heart.
Now all the complaints have gone away from David
Govinda and David Dhawan met last year at producer Ramesh Taurani’s Diwali party and resolved whatever grievances they had. This year both of them met again at Ramesh Taurani’s Diwali party. It was speculated that they had reconciled. When Govinda was admitted to the hospital after being shot, David Dhawan had come to the hospital with his wife.
Amrish Puri slapped him for coming late
It is believed that often arriving late for shooting has also been the reason for Govinda’s downfall. If media reports are to be believed, the shooting of the film ‘Farz Ki Jung’ was to start at 9 o’clock and Govinda reached the set at 6 o’clock in the evening. Amrish Puri got angry when the actor was late by 9 hours. After this there was a lot of debate between Govinda and him. Within no time the situation escalated so much that Amrish Puri slapped Govinda hard. After this incident, Govinda never worked with Amrish Puri again.
Other stars also started shying away from working together
Stars like Amitan Bachchan and Rajnikanth are known for arriving on time. Govinda also made Amitan Bachchan and Rajnikanth wait during the shooting of the film ‘Hum’. Due to which the making of the film was delayed and the budget of the film increased. Because of this no star wanted to work with Govinda. When Govinda’s downfall started, those producers also started keeping distance from him, who were upset with Govinda’s late arrival.
Rs 100 crores are at stake, the film did not get theaters
Govinda was last seen in the film ‘Rangeela Raja’ in 2019. Apart from this, many more of his films have been made, which have not been released till date. Govinda had said during an interview – There are some people who do not want my films to be released. My film ‘Sandvij’ was not released in theatres. Whereas this was Balasaheb Thackeray’s film.
Among my friends, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan praised the film and said that this film deserves to be a superhit, why was it not released? I remained silent. I did not react to that. In the last 10-15 years, I have made such films which have not been released. In which Rs 100 crores are stuck. I don’t understand why my films are not getting the right platform.
Regret of not being able to make a career for the daughter
If Govinda’s daughter Tina Ahuja had debuted with Salman Khan’s film ‘Dabangg’, her career in Bollywood would have been at a different place. No other big production house of Bollywood launched Tina. She debuted with Punjabi singer-actor Gippy Grewal in 2015 with the film ‘Second Hand Husband’, but the film did not work. After this, she also appeared in some music videos, but she did not make a career in acting. Now Tina has distanced herself from acting. Govinda regrets that his daughter’s acting career could not take off.
Now Govinda’s son Yashvardhan Ahuja is going to debut
Govinda’s son Yashvardhan Ahuja is going to debut with National Film Award winning director Sai Ranjan’s film. Madhu Mantena, Allu Aravind and SKN Films will jointly produce this film. The title of the film has not been decided yet, it is being told that it will be a romantic love story.
