2231 people have filed nominations for the elections to be held on December 21 for five municipal corporations in Punjab. 709 nominations filed in Amritsar
According to the Election Commission, a total of 2231 people have applied for the five municipal elections. During this period, 448 people have submitted their claim for Jalandhar, 682 for Ludhiana, 219 for Phagwara, 174 for Patiala and 709 for Amritsar. During the nomination process, the police have been accused of bullying at many places including Patiala and Zira. The matter has reached from the Governor to the High Court.
SAD fielded candidates at the last moment
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has fielded candidates on only nine out of 55 wards in Patiala and 50 wards in Phagwara. Whereas in Patiala, Aam Aadmi Party has claimed to elect five candidates unopposed. These include Ranjit Singh from Ward No. 32, Ramanpreet Kaur from Ward No. 43 Johnny Kohli, Gursharan Singh from Ward 44, Sagar from 52 and Itvinder Singh from 56. BJP chief Vijay Kuka and Akali Dal’s division chief Amarinder Singh Bajaj said that this is the biggest betrayal of their political career.
22 IAS officers deployed as observers
To conduct these elections peacefully, 22 IAS officers have been deployed as observers by the Election Commission. Until the election process is completed. Till then these officers will remain in the said areas. Five IAS have been deployed for municipal corporations. While the remaining will handle the responsibilities of the city councils. Counting of votes will also be completed after the elections on 21st.

Voting will be done through EVM
Cases of snatching of ballot paper for Panchayat elections were reported. At many places, ink was even spilled on the ballot papers cast by the people. To curb this thing, now voting will be done through EVM. 37 lakh 32 thousand voters will vote for 5 corporations. Of these, 19.50 lakh are male and 17 lakh are female voters. Polling time will be from 7 am to 4 pm. Earlier voting used to take place from 8 to 4 pm, but this time it has been extended for 1 hour more.
After the elections, 381 members will be elected in the Municipal Corporation. At the same time, 598 members will be elected in municipal councils. Complete preparations are also being made for law and order. There will be 3 persons at a single polling station. If there are 2 polling stations then 2 officers will be deployed there.
