Rebel fighters in Syria have burned the tomb of President Bashar al-Assad’s father and former President Hafez al-Assad. This tomb was in Kardaha, Latakia, in the north-western region of Syria. Kardaha is the ancestral village of the Asad family.
Bashar’s father Hafez was President of Syria from 1971 to 2000. Hafiz had massacred thousands of people in Hama in 1982. Hafiz died of a heart attack in 2000 after being the President of Syria for 29 years. After the death of Hafiz, his younger son Bashar was made the new President of the country.
In Syria, on December 8, rebel fighters captured the capital Damascus. Due to this, President Bashar left the country and took refuge in Russia. With Bashar leaving the country, the 54-year-long rule of the Assad family over Syria came to an end.
