Today is the 7th day of the rescue operation of workers in a 300 feet deep coal mine in Dima Hasao district of Assam. Till now the bodies of 4 laborers have been recovered. 5 workers are still trapped in the rat holes inside the mine.

The bodies of laborers whose bodies were recovered include those of Ganga Bahadur Shrestha of Nepal on January 8 and Lijen Magar of Umrangso, Khushi Mohan Rai of Kokrajhar and Sarat Goyari of Sonitpur on January 11.

The rescue operation is being run jointly by the Indian Army and NDRF. Meanwhile, Special DGP of Assam Harmeet Singh said that on the day of the accident, the water level in the mine was 30 meters, now it has come down to less than 15 meters.

State Mines and Minerals Minister Kaushik Rai said that the water extraction work may be completed within the next 36 hours.

The body of 27-year-old Lijan Magar was found floating on water on Saturday morning. He was a resident of Kalamati village number 1 of Dima Hasao.

2 arrests, FIR against 2; Congress demands from PM – form SIT

Assam Police had arrested Hanan Laskar and Punush Nunisa in connection with the mine accident. At the same time, Kom Kemprai and Pitush Langthasa of Congress’s Dima Hasao unit have lodged an FIR against North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member (CEM) Debolal Gorlosa and his wife Kanika Hojai. In this, a demand has been made for the immediate arrest of Gorlosa and Hojai. It is claimed that both of them were carrying out illegal mining in the mine.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has written a letter to PM Modi regarding the mine accident and has demanded the formation of a SIT to investigate the matter. Gaurav wrote- The victims’ families should get justice and it is our responsibility to ensure that such incidents do not happen in future.

15 rat hole miners were killed in 2018 also

A similar accident took place in East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya in 2018. Where 15 laborers were trapped and died in the coal mine. On December 13, 20 miners had entered the 370 feet deep mine, out of which 5 workers had come out before filling with water. 15 laborers could not be saved.
