- Indian wicketkeeper Pant has returned to the top-10 in the ICC rankings. What is the thought behind the power of strong comeback in Test cricket, in his own words…
Seeing my stubbornness, maybe my family members stayed with me in every phase. When I was 14 years old, my father bought me a bat worth Rs 14 thousand, which was a big deal for a middle class family. Whenever I used to come to Delhi to play, I used to insist that I will not stay at anyone’s house because I do not want to take any favor from anyone. Sometimes he used to stay in Gurudwara and sometimes he used to spend the night in some game parlor. After the accident, when I needed help for my daily activities, I started facing tremendous problems. Because since childhood I had the habit of doing everything on my own. I had lost respect for myself in such circumstances. That helpless feeling… I’ve always hated it. I learned that we don’t have enough of the little things to be grateful for. We should be thankful to God for everything. Here stubbornness also worked… I was adamant that I had to get out of this situation as soon as possible. So, within three months I was standing on my feet without support for the first time. If you are not stubborn, you will never be able to fulfill your dreams. As a human being, I always want to add things to my life. Can’t even imagine giving up the things I love to do. How can dreams be removed? An accident is a shock, how can you overcome it? With confidence. That belief keeps growing and sometimes it can reach the point of obsession. If you believe in yourself, then persevere. Then you can achieve anything.
spirituality makes you more disciplined If you are spiritual, you also become more disciplined. It is a personal choice. This helped me a lot to focus on myself. When I had an accident, I felt that a power had saved me. The way the accident happened, I only injured my knee, but I can’t even imagine how bad it could have been. The doctors even told me that there could be a need for amputation. I always thought about God. This has given me a different perspective. I know there is someone watching me.
Don’t think too much, go with life Life cannot be understood by just one thing. Life is a collection of experiences. One thing alone cannot define your entire life. Life is a journey and you should embrace whatever comes your way, without planning too much about the future. Let life be life. Don’t make too long plans. If there are fewer plans, there will be less scope for feeling bad. You will never be able to think bigger than what life has planned for you. (Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant in various interviews)
