BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday said that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power in West Bengal, it will form a commission to investigate the atrocities in Sandeshkhali and send Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to jail. Adhikari, leader of opposition in the Bengal Assembly, said, “You (Banerjee) have told people to forget whatever happened. The people of Sandeshkhali will not forget. I will not forget either. If BJP comes to power in West Bengal, A commission will be formed to investigate the Sandeshkhal incidents.”
He further said, you had trapped the women of Sandeshkhali and sent them to jail. BJP will also send you to jail for filing false cases against women. The Chief Minister had recently visited North 24 Parganas district. A day later, the officer who visited Sandeshkhali said, “We will take revenge as per law, with interest and within the bounds of the Constitution.”
The officer was addressing a BJP outreach program in Sandeshkhali. He accused Banerjee of conspiring to file false cases against women in the area ahead of the 2024 elections to punish people for protesting against local strongman leaders of TMC like Shahjahan Sheikh.
The BJP leader’s aggressive attack against Banerjee comes a day after he asked the people of the area to “let bygones be bygones”. This was his first visit to the river island since violent protests broke out in February 2024 over allegations of sexual harassment and land grab by a section of TMC leaders.
Banerjee said on Monday, “I know that there was a big game behind this stir and a game of money. Later people realized that the whole matter was a lie. Ultimately the truth comes out, bygones are bygones. “I don’t want to keep these things in mind.”
The BJP tried to make Sandeshkhali a major election issue against TMC this summer, especially in the Basirhat assembly constituency, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The TMC, in turn, had alleged that Adhikari “conspired” to frame local TMC leaders on sexual harassment charges and “paid money to women” to defame Bengal ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
