A 20-year-old girl was allegedly shot dead by her own father on Tuesday, four days before her marriage in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. It is being said that this incident happened because the girl wanted to marry someone else. The accused shot his daughter dead in front of the police officers.
According to NDTV report, the victim has been identified as Tanu Gurjar, who had openly opposed the marriage arranged by her family, expressing her desire to marry a boy of her choice.
This murder took place at around 9 pm on Tuesday evening in Gola Ka Mandir area of Gwalior. The accused, Mahesh Gurjar, allegedly enraged by a video posted on social media of his daughter that day, shot her at close range with a country-made pistol.
Not only this, Tanu’s cousin, Rahul was also allegedly involved in this incident and later he also opened fire on the girl, resulting in her death.
The police were present at the spot after acting on a video uploaded by the victim. She had refused to stay at home and requested to be taken to the one-stop centre. The One-Stop Center is a government initiative aimed at providing protection to women affected by violence.
However, her father insisted on talking to her in private and claimed that he could convince her, the report said.
The accused, armed with a country-made gun, allegedly shot his daughter in the chest. Her cousin also allegedly fired bullets which hit the victim on her forehead, neck and between her eyes and nose. Tanu immediately collapsed and died.
After the murder, both the accused pointed weapons at the police and family members present at the spot. The police overpowered and arrested the father after threatening him with further consequences, while the cousin managed to escape with the pistol.
This murder took place at a time when preparations were going on at home for Tanu’s wedding, which was scheduled for January 18.
According to the police, Mahesh Gurjar has been arrested and the murder weapon has been recovered from him. Police have started raids to catch Rahul. Further investigation into the case is ongoing, with police reviewing the victim’s social media accounts.
