In 2006, the murder of an unmarried mother Ranjini and her 17-day-old twins in Kollam, Kerala, shook the entire state. The throats of all three were brutally slit. When Ranjini’s mother returned from the Panchayat office, she was shocked to see this horrific scene soaked in blood. The police tried everything possible, but no clue of the murderer was found. The matter reached CBI, but it was not solved for 19 years. Then in 2025, Artificial Intelligence (AI) played an important role in solving this murder mystery.
AI identified the murderer using old photos and data. By combining these photographs with those available on social media, the police achieved great success. This case proves that even the oldest and most difficult cases can be solved with the help of technology.
Love, betrayal and a creepy conspiracy
Ranjini had an affair with army soldier Devil Kumar. After becoming pregnant, Ranjini refused to get an abortion, which ended their relationship. Meanwhile, Devil’s friend Rajesh disguised himself as Anil Kumar and befriended Ranjini. On the pretext of helping her, he got a house on rent for Ranjini to live in solitude. On February 10, 2006, he sent Ranjini’s mother to the Panchayat office and during that time he killed the mother and both the children.
AI solved 19 year old case
The police began investigation based on information received from the crime scene, but both the accused—Divil and Rajesh—absconded from the Army camp in Pathankot. After 19 years, the police updated his old photographs with the help of AI and started searching on social media. The clue came from a wedding photo on Facebook, in which the faces matched 90%. On the basis of this, both the accused were arrested from Puducherry on 4 January 2025. Where he was doing interior design work with a new identity and living a married life.
