The shifting of toxic waste from Bhopal’s Union Carbide factory has started after 40 years. At 9 pm on Wednesday night, 12 containers carrying 337 metric tons of garbage left for Pithampur. The waste is being sent to Pithampur through tight security and a 250 km long green corridor.

Every container has a unique number. The route through which these truck containers will travel will be informed to the district administration and police. The containers are going to Pithampur via Karond Mandi, People’s Mall, Karond Square, Gandhi Nagar, Mubarakpur, Sehore Naka. This route has been chosen because the traffic pressure on this route is less at night.

Here, arrangements were made for their food and even bathing. The bottles in which the workers and officers drank water were also taken away.

How will the waste be disposed of? The container was weighed before shipping. Weighing will also be done on reaching Pithampur. A wooden platform has been made in Pithampur to keep the garbage. This platform is 25 feet above the ground. The team of CPCB scientists will decide when to burn this waste. Sample testing will also be done before deciding in which season, at what temperature and in what quantity it should be burnt. First 37 tonnes of garbage will be burnt.
