The government will start the process of privatization of airports after the presentation of the budget for the next financial year. The government wants to privateize and develop airports under Public-Private Partnership (PPP). Three people associated with this issue gave this information to Moneycontrol. A senior officer of the Ministry of Civil Aviation said that the cabinet note for the next phase airport privateization is almost ready. It will be handed over to the Ministry of Finance next week. It will then be sent to the cabinet for approval.

Pre-bidding consultation expected to start in February

He told that the government wants to start this process before the FY25 is over. Pre-bidding consultation for this in February (Budget 2025) It is expected to start after introduction. Another official told Moneycontrol that fast work is being done on the next phase of process so that it can be announced by the Finance Minister in the budget to be presented in February next year. The second official said, “The list of airports which will be privatized under the new phase will give the final Approval Cabinet. We have considered the names of some airports that were earlier part of the Protection Plan.”

25 airports have been identified to lease

For more information about this, the mail sent to the Finance Ministry and Ministry of Civil Aviation was not replied. Under the Central Government’s National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP), 25 airports were identified between 2022-2025. These include Bhubaneswar, Varanasi, Amritsar, Trichy, Indore, Raipur, Calicut, Coimbatur, Nagpur, Patna, Madurai, Surat, Ranchi, Jodhpur, Chennai, Vijayawada, Vadodara, Bhopal, Tirupati, Hubli, Infhal, Agartala, Udaipur, Dehradun and Rajmundari.

Plan to lease for better management

The government wants to give on airports lease. The government believes that this will improve their management. Private sector capacity will be used in this. In this regard, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol said in the Rajya Sabha in August, “The increase in airports infrastructure and facility will finally benefit passengers. Private sector under PPP operates, manages and develops the airport under PPP.”
