Police on Wednesday arrested the main accused in the violence case that erupted in Nagpur, Maharashtra, who has been identified as Faheem Khan. Police say that Khan had instigated violence. According to the police, this week was the same person behind the riots in Nagpur, Maharashtra, where there was a clash between two communities seeking transfer of the tomb of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb out of the state. The accused Khan was arrested on Tuesday night and will remain in police custody till March 21.
Faheem Khan is a local leader of the minority Democratic Party and has been sent to police custody by that Friday. Meanwhile, the police is also investigating that “this (violence) was the act of any person or organization”.
So far, the police have registered six cases and have filed a complaint against 1,200 people, out of which the names of less than 200 people have been registered so far. The rest of the people are being searched.
CNN-NEWS18 quoted FIR as saying that Faheem Khan, who emerged as the main suspect, first asked people to gather near the police station and then near a mosque in the palace area of Nagpur, where clashes took place. Police is investigating his role in clashes.
The FIR states that Khan’s group had earlier submitted a memorandum to Ganeshpeth Police Station, seeking legal action against the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers. However, it later turned violent.
In many videos of March 17, the rioters allegedly shouted slogans in support of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and call it ‘Alamgir Hazrat’. Khan allegedly provoked people, instigating violence and spreading rumors of insulting a sacred book.
