Vice Presidential Election 2025: The party’s parliamentary board meeting is being held today (August 17) to finalize the name of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Vice Presidential election. The ruling NDA at the Center has authorized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda to select the candidate for Vice President. The parliamentary party meeting is going on at the BJP headquarters in Delhi.
PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh were present in this meeting, Union Minister JP Nadda and other senior leaders in the Parliamentary Board meeting. The name of the Vice President’s candidate may be decided in this meeting.
The last date for filing nominations for the election for the post of Vice President is August 21. Apart from Prime Minister Modi and Union Ministers, the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of the BJP -led states -led states may also be part of the process of filing nominations of the National Democratic Alliance candidate.
Sources said that the monsoon session of Parliament is resumed from August 18 after a small holiday. The NDA candidates are expected to have another meeting of the leaders of the BJP and its allies, which may include all the allies before filing their nomination. A leader said that several set nominations will be filed by MPs in support of the NDA candidate.
If the opposition also announces its candidate, then the Vice Presidential election will be held on 9 September. The NDA has an absolute majority in the electoral college, which includes members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The victory of the ruling coalition candidate is certain in the event of the contest. This election has to be held due to sudden resignation from the post of Vice President, citing the health reasons of Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda will play an important role in the selection process of the new Vice President. In a recent meeting of NDA leaders, it was already indicated that the final decision regarding the Vice Presidential candidate would be taken unanimously by PM Modi and Nadda. Final selection is expected to be announced soon after the party’s internal deliberations by the NDA leadership.

The Vice President is elected by the votes of members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. According to 781 members, a candidate requires at least 391 votes to win. The ruling coalition candidate with a sufficient majority of the NDA in both houses of Parliament is widely expected to win the election easily in the election. The NDA currently has the support of 422 MPs. This ensures that his chosen candidate will win the election with a strong majority.
