Police said on Saturday that a 55 -year -old man has been arrested for attacking a minor girl in Western Tripura district, raping her and then poisoning her. Police said the 15 -year -old rape victim has been admitted to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala, where her condition is said to be stable.
Police said the accused allegedly knew the victim, who lives in the same neighborhood, and the girl used to call her as ‘Dadu’. Police said the incident took place on Friday morning, when the accused took her to a deserted room in the area and beaten her, causing her to faint. He was later raped by the accused.
“We had received a complaint yesterday yesterday. Although he was absconding since the incident, we arrested him from a nearby area at midnight.” He further stated that a case has been registered against the accused under the sections of rape and attempt to murder under the POCSO Act.
BJP MLA and Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Deepak Mazumdar met the rape victim in the hospital on Friday and demanded strict action against the accused.
“Our administration is committed to taking action against such incidents,” Mazumdar said.
Last month, an autorickshaw driver was arrested for alleged involvement in the sexual harassment incident of a minor girl in Khoai district.
In another incident, two minors were sexually assaulted in different parts of Tripura and the police arrested the accused in both cases.
On 22 August, police detained two people on the basis of a rape of a minor in Gomti district. One of the detained people was a 16 -year -old rape victim.
Earlier this month, a person was convicted of raping a schoolgirl several times in another case in Unakoti district and sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.
In May, three days after the incident, a man was arrested for kidnapping a 14 -year -old girl and raping her.
