India’s last and most sensitive railway station
Attari railway station in Amritsar district of Punjab is considered to be the last railway station in India. This railway station is located on the India Pakistan border and once the Samjota Express train used to depart from here. Everyone traveling by this train had to show their passport and visa before entering Attari station.
Being located on the border, there is a very tight security system here and anyone entering without the required documents is immediately prosecuted under the Foreign Act. It is not just a railway station but a sensitive border gate between the two countries.
When did the Samjota Express start and why was it stopped?
The Samjota Express was launched in 1976 as part of an effort to improve relations between the two countries following the 1971 Shimla Accord between Indiga Gandhi and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. The Samjota Express ran from Attari to Lahore and thousands of people traveled on this train for many years.
Earlier this train used to run daily, but later it was decided to run twice a week due to security and political situation. Then in the year 2019, after the abrogation of Article 370 by India, Pakistan stopped this service. Interestingly, 11 coaches of the Indian train were stuck in Lahore at the time of Samjota Express closure, while 16 coaches of the Pakistani train are still standing at Attari station today.
