India keeping close tabs on China-Pak collusion in the IOR, revising plans: Navy chief | India News

New Delhi: India keeps updating its operational and capability-development plans to counter China’s ever-expanding naval presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) as well its growing collusiveness in the maritime domain with Pakistan, Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar said on Friday.
With the world’s largest Navy with over 360 warships and submarines, China now has “a sustained presence” in the IOR with six to eight warships deployed at any given time, apart from research or spy vessels and many fishing vessels.Beijing is also assiduously working to establish logistical bases from Africa to the Malacca Strait.
“Pakistan is also looking at expanding its Navy from what it is today to a 50-platform force with the help of China. We are seized of it. Looking at these developments, we constantly revise our plans and capability-development programmes,” Admiral Kumar said, speaking in the run-up to the Navy Day on December 4.
China in May, for instance, delivered two Type 054A/P multi-role frigates to Pakistan to add to the two given earlier, while deliveries of eight Yuan-class diesel-electric submarines, with air-independent propulsion (AIP) for greater underwater endurance, are also slated to begin soon.
Given the budgetary constraints, the 132-warship Indian Navy with 140 aircraft and 130 helicopters now aims to have 175 warships with a corresponding increase in number of aircraft, helicopters and drones by 2035.
With older warships slated to progressively retire, the Navy currently has 67 warships and vessels on order in Indian shipyards and two frigates in Russia, collectively worth an estimated Rs 2 lakh crore.
“There is a sustained presence of Chinese warships in the IOR. We are cognizant of that, and we take action to monitor their activities so that we know who is operating where and what they are doing,” Admiral Kumar said, while expressing confidence at his force’s footprint and high operational tempo in the IOR and the larger Indo-Pacific.
Noting that China may have a legitimate reason to be present in the IOR for its economic activities, Admiral Kumar said, “But as the resident naval power, we keep an eye on what all is happening there. We try to keep the extra-regional forces present in the region under surveillance.”
The Navy keeps its units “mission-deployed” regularly across the IOR and beyond to protect, preserve and promote India’s national interests. By frequent interactions and exercises with the navies of friendly foreign countries, especially ones like the US, trust as well as interoperability are developed to tackle challenges together.
Navy vice chief Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singhin turn, said that while China was certainly one of the leaders in developing new-age military technologies in satellites, cyber, space and other domains, India too has been “consistently investing” in improving its indigenous defence production capabilities and R&D base.
“Unless the defence-industrial base in our country is self-sustaining and self-reliant, we will not be able to meet the challenges ahead. As long as you are dependent on imports, you will remain vulnerable. So, significant strides have been taken in this regard in recent years,” he added.

Navy appoints first woman CO of small warship

The Navy has now appointed the first woman to command a fast-attack craft (FAC), a small warship meant for coastal patrol, in keeping with its philosophy of “all roles-all ranks” for female personnel, Admiral Kumar said.
The woman, a Lt Commander (equivalent to a Major in the Army), is now undergoing “pre-commissioning training” before taking command of the 260-tonne INS Trinkatwhich has a crew of 33, on the western seaboard.
The Navy already has around 30 women officers deployed on major warships like aircraft carriers, destroyers and frigates, while several are also serving in its aviation wing. The chief said there was no restriction on women from even serving on board submarines or as marine commandos if they volunteered and cleared the stringent selection and training programmes.
Around 20 women Agniveers or sailors had appeared for the aptitude test for induction into the marine commandos but none of them qualified. Apart from around 600 officers, there are now 1,100 women Agniveers in the Navy, which include the first batch of 272 that graduated from INS Chilka in March this year. The rest are undergoing training now.

Govt making all-out efforts to get naval veterans back from Qatar

The government is making “all-out efforts” to ensure the eight former Indian Navy personnel on the death row in Qatar are brought back home, Admiral Kumar said on Friday.
“The ex-naval officers in Qatar are veterans…and we are interested in ensuring their welfare. We are working closely with all the agencies concerned to ensure that their interests are looked after,” the Navy chief said.
The seven retired officers and a sailor, who were arrested allegedly for espionage in August last year while they were working with a Doha-based private company Al Dahra Global Technologies and Consulting Services, were given the death sentence by Qatar’s Court of First Instance on October 26.
India described the ruling as “deeply” shocking, vowing to explore all legal options in the case. A higher court in Qatar has admitted an appeal recently filed against the death sentence.

4th T20I: Rinku, Axar shine as India seal series with 20-run win over Australia | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma fireworks followed by an all-round show from the bowlers led by Axar Patel as India eased past Australia in the fourth T20I in Raipur to seal the five-match series on Friday.
With the 20-run victory, India took an unassailable 3-1 lead as skipper Suryakumar Yadav bagged his first series win as captain.

Ignored for the upcoming assignment in South Africa, left-arm spinner Axar responded with superb figures of 3/16 as India successfully defended 174.

Rinku blazed away to a 29-ball 46 while Jitesh smashed 35 in 19 balls before Australia pulled things back to stop India at 174/9 after the visitors opted to bowl first.
Cruising at 167 for four in 18.3 overs, India lost five wickets for only seven runs in the last two overs, thanks to Ben Dwarshuis (3/40) and Jason Behrendorff (2/32).
As It Happened
In reply, Australia were restricted to 154 for seven in 20 overs as India took an unassailable 3-1 lead with a match to go. Matthew Wade remained not out on 36 off 23 balls.
Axar and Ravi Bishnoi (1/17) were magnificent, bowling eight overs for only 33 runs with four scalps to their credit. There was no dew and hence the target of 175 became defendable unlike Guwahati. Both spinners hit immaculate lengths and mostly bowled stump to stump which became Australia’s undoing.

Set a target of 175, Australia were off to a flyer with Travis Head (31 off 16 balls) collecting a flurry of boundaries to lift his team to 42 for one in four overs, including picking 22 runs off seamer Deepak Chahar.
Seasoned spinner Axar however had the hero of Australia’s World Cup final caught after the batter got a leading edge while attempting a slog-sweep.

It was a huge breakthrough for India, coming 10 balls after leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi knocked over Josh Philippe’s off-stump with one that straightened.
Playing across the line, Aaron Hardie’s middle stump was disturbed by Axar as he put India in a position of strength by leaving Australia at 55 for three at the end of seventh over.
Skipper Suryakumar Yadav introduced Avesh Khan into the attack and the seamer started on a good note, conceding six runs in his first over.
Ben McDermott (19) and Tim David (19) steadied the Australian innings with a 35-run partnership before Axar picked up his third wicket to leave the visitors in a very difficult situation at 87 for four in the 12th over and with the run rate pressure increasing.
Axar hit McDermott’s off stump as the batter went for a big shot.
Taken to the cleaners by Head earlier in the innings, Chahar came back strongly to dismiss David and reduce Australia to 107 for five in the 15th over and the match tilted decisively in favour of India.
Earlier, Aaron Hardie started the match with a maiden over before Yashasvi Jaiswal (37 off 28 balls) got off the mark with a lovely cover drive Jason Behrendorff.
The 21-year-old Jaiswal launched into Ben Dwarshuis in the third over, hitting the left-arm seamer for three boundaries to set the tone for the hosts.
Ruturaj Gaikwad (32 off 28 balls) watched the action from the other end as Jaiswal went after the bowling and when the former did get strike for the first time in the fourth over, he employed the cut shot off a Behrendorff delivery to open his account with a boundary.
Jaiswal continued with his aggressive ways and played debutant spinner Chris Green through the off-side for a four before smashing him over the midwicket fence for a six.
Recalled into the attack to stem the flow of runs, Hardie was hit straight down the ground for a four by Jaiswal, but the decision to bring him back ended in a success as Australia got their first breakthrough in the left-handed opener.
Going for one too many, Jaiswal could not connect well enough and Ben McDermott completed a good catch running from mid-on, as India reached 50 for one at the end of powerplay.
Joining the side after a small break following the World Cup, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer (8), looking to hit leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha out of the ground, could not get enough power or elevation and Green took the catch at long-on.
Skipper Suryakumar Yadav (1) casually edged Dwarshuis to the keeper, leaving India at 63 for three in the beginning of the ninth over and the crowd at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium silent.
The partisan spectators were however not required to keep quiet for long as Rinku Singh got going straightaway, his customary powerful strokes aiding him.
Rinku and Ruturaj added 48 runs for the fourth wicket before the latter was dismissed by Sangha. But that did not deter Rinku from playing his natural game and he found an able ally in Jitesh, the two adding 50 runs in just 29 balls to lift India’s run rate.

Watch: 20 teams will feature in T20 World Cup for the first time

Jitesh, however, fell when he was looking good to add a few more runs to his total.

The government data released on Friday also showed that the annual groundwater extraction was 241.3 BCM, only 2 BCM more than that of last year.
While this is a positive sign amid efforts of central and state governments to conserve waterthe report titled “Dynamic Ground Water Resources of India2023” also shows how extraction of ground water continues to be a cause for concern in Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana where more water is pumped out than what’s recharged.Delhi comes fourth in the list where nearly 100% of the water recharged is extracted, with New Delhi district registering maximum extraction at 138%.
In the case of Punjab, which tops the list, the extraction of groundwater is 164%. In Sangrur and Malerkotla, the withdrawal of groundwater is more than three times of what is recharged. The data show that in Rajasthan, the extraction of groundwater is at 148% and in Haryana, this stood at 136%.

Navy Denied: Navy denied allegation over landing permission for Rahul Gandhi | India News

KOCHI: After Congress made an allegation on Friday that the defence ministry denied landing permission for an aircraft carrying the party leader Rahul Gandhi at the Naval Airport in Kochi, the Indian Navy clarified that “Permission for landing was neither accorded nor denied.”
It was on Friday morning that the district congress committee president, Muhammed Shiyazraised an allegation that the ministry initially granted permission and later withdrew it, creating confusion over his journey from Kannur to Kochi.
According to the schedule of Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Kochi to attend the Mahila Congress convention, released by the party on Thursday, Rahul was supposed to land at Nedumbassery airport at 11:30 am on Friday. However, on Friday morning, party leaders informed the media that Rahul would land at Naval Airport at 11:15 am and would reach the convention venue around 11:30 am. As he didn’t arrive on time, Shiyaz announced at the venue that the defence ministry withdrew permission that was granted earlier. “We received prior permission from the Navy for the landing, and we planned Rahul’s journey according to the permission,” Shiyaz said.
Denying the allegation, a Navy source in Kochi clarified later that “the request for an unscheduled chartered flight along with the flight plan was received at INS Garuda air station at Kochi at 9:40 am on Friday and at Naval Headquarters at 10:15 am, for takeoff from Kannur Airport at 10:45 am. Due to the delayed request and the paucity of time prior to the departure of the flight, the clearance for the same could not be processed.”
It is learned that Naval authorities required prior permission from the ministry to allow landing for an unscheduled chartered flight.

Maldives: India, Maldives agree to set up core group to further deepen ties as PM Modi meets new President Muizzu | India News

DUBAI: India and the Maldiveson Friday agreed to set up a core group to further deepen their partnership as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a “productive” meeting with newly-elected Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu and discussed ways to enhance the bilateral friendship across diverse sectors. The decision to set up the core group was taken at the first meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Muizzu on the sidelines of the COP28 World Climate Action Summit here.
“President @MMuizzu and I had a productive meeting today. We discussed ways to enhance the India-Maldives friendship across diverse sectors. We look forward to working together to deepen cooperation for the benefit of our people,” Modi tweeted after the meeting.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders discussed ways to further bolster India-Maldives relations in sectors pertaining to economic relations, development cooperation and people-to-people ties.
A close associate of former Maldives President Abdulla Yameen, who forged close ties with China during his Presidency from 2013 to 2018, Muizzu, 45, defeated India-friendly incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the presidential runoff held in September.
On Friday, Modi personally congratulated Muizzu on his assumption of office as the President of Maldives.
“Both leaders reviewed the wide-ranging bilateral relations between the two countries including people-to-people linkages, development cooperation, economic relations, climate change and sports,” the external affairs ministry said in a statement.
“The two leaders also discussed ways to further deepen their partnership. In this regard, they agreed to set up a core group,” the statement said.
The meeting took place days after President Muizzu requested India to withdraw 77 Indian military personnel from the country and decided to review more than 100 bilateral agreements between the two countries.
Muizzu’s request came when India’s Union Minister Kiren Rejiju paid a courtesy call on the new president at the latter’s office on November 18.
Maldives is India’s key maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and occupies a special place in the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’.
Maldives’ proximity to the west coast of India (barely 70 nautical miles away from Minicoy and 300 nautical miles away from India’s West coast), and its location at the hub of commercial sea lanes running through the Indian Ocean gives it significant strategic importance to India.
Observers say despite his party’s pro-China rhetoric, Muizzu, a British-educated civil engineer, may follow a more nuanced foreign policy as the country faces a precarious economy with several debt repayments due, taking a cue from the worst economic crisis faced by Sri Lanka.
India stepped in with USD four billion in assistance to Sri Lanka while China dithered despite massive BRI investments in the country including the Hambantota port which Beijing took over for a 99-year lease as debt swap.

French nuclear operator EDF announced earlier this week that it had signed a memorandum of cooperation with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to explore the opportunity to maximize the local content of the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant Project.
