Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar defends his use of 'yugpurush' accolade for PM Modi | India News

MUMBAI: Vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday said he won’t go on the backfoot over his use of the ‘yugpurush‘ compliment for Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he “very consciously” used it. Speaking at an event in Mumbai last month, Dhankhar had described Mahatma Gandhi as the ‘mahapurush’ of the last century, and termed PM Modi the ‘yugpurush’ (personality of an era) of this century, drawing criticism from a few quarters.
Addressing the students and faculty of Hidayatullah National Law University in Chhattisgarh capital Raipur on Sunday, he defended his use of the accolade.
“I am not on backfoot. Very consciously I called our prime minister at a function in Mumbai, a ‘yugpurush’. You young boys and girls, analyse, go to a public domain and find out the attributes, whom we can label as a yugpurush.
“After all, there will have to be a yugpurush at a particular point in time… there cannot be a better place than Bharat. A man who has changed and revolutionalised lives of our girls… imagine banking inclusion explosion… no one ever thought of it,” he said.
Dhankhar also lauded Modi for “taking care of dignity of women”, getting water in every household and taking care of “tears” by providing cooking gas connections.
Reacting to Dhankhar’s remarks on Mahatma Gandhi and Modi, BSP MP Danish Ali had earlier asked which new era had begun by giving liberty to an MP of the PM’s party to abuse a certain community, in a reference to racial slurs against him inside Parliament.
Without taking any names, the Vice President appealed to the students to neutralise the “forces that make mischievous efforts to set afloat narratives that are anti-nationals”.
“You, as brilliant young minds … it is your duty, pious obligation, to do it. Some people have a poor appetite for the growth trajectory of our nation. Whenever something good happens in our country, either in the country or outside, they make mischievous efforts to set afloat narratives that are anti-nationals,” he said.
Nothing can be more dangerous in society than “an informed mind, an intelligent mind” trying to exploit people’s ignorance to generate political equity, he added.
“Take pride in our global achievements, phenomenal rise and respect we have earned worldwide. There was a time when the world used to render advice to us. Now, Bharat is a settler of agendas for the entire world. That ecosystem was not there earlier. All this happened because we have visionary leadership,” he said.
Dhankhar said the women’s reservation bill, which was passed in both houses of Parliament, will be fructified post delimitation of Lok Sabha seats.
“We have distinguished minds asking why it is not being implemented in 2024. If I plant a sapling, why should I go out to see why it has not become a big tree? It will take its own time. It is a great development,” he added.

Katrina Kaif says she was really anxious while planning her wedding with Vicky Kaushal right after the lockdown | Hindi Movie News

Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal got married in December 2021 and left everyone surprised as before that, they had never really opened up about their relationship. They were also never really spotted together. The couple tied the knot, just when the world had slowly started opening up post the lockdown. Katrina recently admitted during a conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival that she was really nervous when they were planning the wedding.
The couple was quite anxious while planning their wedding as they had to stick to the covid guidelines and get Katrina’s family from different parts of the world together. During this discussion at the festival, Katrina said, “We were trying to plan our wedding just as the world was opening up. Like many, many people, we had to wait for the lockdowns to be lifted so that we could have a wedding with all our families there and all that I was keeping my fingers crossed for was that my entire family had to be there from all the corners of the world which we managed. So that was wonderful.”
Katrina also joked about the kind of chaos it is because it’s a family of six girls. Katrina has five sisters and a brother. So, with 6 girls in the family, it can get quite noisy and chaotic. The actress laughed and said that they would fight for mirror space, combs and hairbrushes. But they’re all skilled at braiding each other’s hair. “My sisters became my support system. We are an insular unit that we don’t need anyone else. People are welcome but when we all are together, it feels complete.”
Katrina and Vicky tied the knot in a grand palatial wedding in Rajasthan. It was quite an intimate affair and nobody from the industry was seen at the wedding, except their close friends and family.
On work front, Katrina was last seen in ‘Tiger 3’ which was a success at the box office. The actress also got a lot of accolades for the action she did in the movie. Katrina will be seen next in ‘Merry Christmas’ alongside Vijay Sethupathidirected by Sri Ram Raghavan.

India agrees to withdraw soldiers from Maldives :President Muizzu

NEW DELHI: India’s government has agreed to withdraw its soldiers from the Maldivesthe Indian Ocean archipelago’s President Mohamed Muizzu said on Sunday.
Muizzu won the presidential election in September, having campaigned to alter the Maldives’s “India first” policy and promising the removal of a small Indian military presence of some 75 personnel.
“In the discussions we had, the Indian government has agreed to remove Indian soldiers,” Muizzu told reporters.”We also agreed to set up a high level committee to solve issues related to development projects.”
Muizzu made the remarks following engagements on the sidelines of the COP28 climate summit with Indian officials.
India provides certain military equipment to the Maldives, assists in disaster response and has been helping build a naval dockyard there.
A senior Indian government official in New Delhi told Reuters discussions took place between India and the Maldives on the matter, and both sides recognised the importance of the assistance India provides.
The Maldives “acknowledged the utility of these (Indian) platforms … Discussions on how to keep them operational are ongoing. The core group that both sides have agreed to set up will look at details of how to take this forward,” said the official, without commenting directly on Muizzu’s remarks.
India’s ministry of foreign affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.
India and China have been vying for influence in the region, with the coalition that supports Muizzu considered to have a leaning more towards China.
Most of the Indian military personnel were in the Maldives to operate and manage two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft given to the Maldives by India.
At his inauguration last month, Muizzu said he would ensure that his country has no foreign military presence.
He had made the request of Indian troop withdrawal to Kiren Rijiju, India’s minister for earth sciences, who represented India at the president’s inauguration.

Old Lokhandwala residents grapple with new Khau Gully menace | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: The earliest high rise buildings to come up in Lokhandwala ComplexAndheri, were the envy of the western suburbs back in the mid-1980s. The township was slowly developing into a posh residential enclave, the kind Andheri West had not seen before.
Today however, residents of Old Lokhandwalaas it is called, are beleaguered by the hawker menace, potholed roads and darkly lit streets which compromise the value of flats worth Rs 4.5 crore to Rs 6 crore.Affected societies along Lions SOL Road include Grenville, Highland Park, Premium Tower,Samarth Aishwarya, Mala Tower, Link Garden and Legend, partially Tarapore societies and Millat Nagar.
In the absence of clearly defined hawking zones in the city, Highland Park area has fallen victim to a spurt in the number of street vendors. Handcarts selling vegetables and fruits, street food and apparel have overrun roads.
Residents of the once peaceful locality are aggrieved over 15-20 street food vendors who cook meals using gas cylinders. Some have laid out tables for customers as well. Last week, one woman coffee vendor trespassed into Highland Park, one of the oldest and most prestigious gated societies, and pushed and shoved residents and security personnel who had objected to her presence outside the gate. “And she filed an NC in the police station against us!” said a society member showing TOI a video of the woman abusing and manhandling residents.
TOI visited the area twice this past week, and witnessed a cluster of pav bhaji, chhole bhature, momos, vada pav, poli bhaji and tea stalls operating on site. “Our lane has become a Khau Gully for breakfast, tea, lunch and dinner meals,” said a Grenville resident. “There is a dhobi, a clothes stall and shoe stall which is the size of a small Nike showroom.” Lions SOL Road is being concretised and is already blocked to traffic.
“The food stalls attract crowds of rickshaw and tempo drivers and labourers, and cause illegal parking. Women and girls feel unsafe. Our gates are virtually blocked. And a dark alley between Highland Park and Premium Towers has become a haven for transgender sex workers and drug peddlers,” said a resident.
On Saturday, K West ward evicted the hawkers even as TOI reporters were on site. “We team up with health, fire and police officials, and demolish stalls and confiscate gas cylinders. But the hawkers return. What can they do either. This is the only livelihood they know. They cannot become construction workers, after all,” said one BMC officer.
Dhaval Shah of residents association LOCA said, “The violation of the HC verdict over hawkers using LPG cylinders is being flouted, endangering lives of pedestrians and generating garbage.”

Besides restoring power lines and transportation facilities in affected areas, steps should be taken to ensure proper sanitation in and around the relief camps, the Chief Minister said, adding that he should be updated periodically on the situation.
The Chief Minister told the collectors that he would review the situation again through a video conference on Monday morning.
He directed the civil supplies department to ensure that the paddy stocked in the fields does not get wet and also to procure the paddy available irrespective of its status and send the stocks to the rice mills or other available godowns at the earliest.
Given the possibility of heavy rains, officials should be ready to take all steps to safeguard people and property in the affected rural and urban areas, he told them.

Given the impending cyclone Michaungthe East Coast Railway (ECoR) of Indian Railways has cancelled as many as 54 trains as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers. The cancellations will be in effect from December 2 to December 7.

No matter how well the photo of opposition leaders is clicked, it cannot win people's trust: PM Modi | India News

NEW DELHI: As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on its way to winning the assembly elections in the Hindi heartland, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at the opposition parties, saying that if they come together at one stage, no matter how well the photo is clicked, they cannot win the trust of people.
“These election results are a learning experience for the Congress and its arrogant alliance parties as well.If some dynastic parties come together at one stage, no matter how well the photo is clicked, you cannot win the trust of the country,” Prime Minister Modi said while speaking to party workers at the BJP’s headquarters in Delhi.
“To win the country’s heart you need to show the will to serve the country. And these arrogant alliance partners, do not show any intention of doing so,” he added.
The Prime Minister said that these opposition alliance partners engage in “foul talk” and “negativity” to grab media headlines but it is not enough to win people’s hearts.
“Foul talk, despair and negativity can help these arrogant parties to get attractive media headlines but this does not give them a place in people’s hearts,” PM Modi said.
Taking on the INDIA bloc parties, the Prime Minister said that the assembly election results, the counting of which is in the final stages, said that they do not feel ashamed of joining hands with those who are “corrupt”.
“This (election results) is a lesson for those parties that do not feel ashamed of allying with those who indulge in corruption. Those who want to cover up corrupt people and speak ill of agencies investigating corruption should understand that these election results show people’s support for the fight against corruption,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also warned the Congress’ alliance partners not to stand against development and welfare.
“Today’s results are a threat against those forces who stand against development and national welfare. Whenever there is development, the Congress and its allies oppose it. When we launch Vande Bharat trains, Ayushman Bharat, make homes for the poor, provide tap water connections to them, send them funds for village welfare, they oppose it, and make fun of it,” PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister asked all the opposition parties to work on themselves so that people do not wipe them out in the elections.
“The BJP has challenged all these parties today, asking them to improve on themselves. Otherwise, people will clean you up one by one,” Modi warned.
Asking opposition parties not to impede the smooth flow of central government schemes, Modi said, “Today, it is a lesson for all these parties not to come in between the central government’s schemes for the poor and the funds sent for them. If they do not do so, people will knock them off.”
Modi also advised the Congress and its alliance partners not to engage in politics that gives a boost to anti-national forces and works to divide and weaken the country.
“For the sake of democracy, I would like to advise the Congress and its alliance parties, not to practice any politics that gives strength to anti-national forces, to those who divide society, and to ideologies that weaken the country,” he said.
The BJP is on its way to creating a record in Madhya Pradesh and its expected coming to power again after having ruled the state for 18 of the past 20 years is an apparent indication of the party’s organizational hold in the state as well as popularity of its schemes and leadership.
Rajasthan seems to have followed the over three-decade-old trend of rotating governments and the Congress government led by Ashok Gehlot appears to be on its way out.
BJP has bounced back strongly in Chhattisgarhwhere the ruling Congress was expected to have done well. A strong, sustained and aggressive campaign and its matching Congress in poll promises seem to work for the BJP.
The counting of votes in the four states, which went to the polls last month, started at 8 am on Sunday.

'Missed the mark': KTR trolls himself as humour, digs galore online over poll results | India News

NEW DELHI: With the assembly polls throwing up quite a few surprises, the funny side of leaders and social media users was on display as digs and pot shots galore online. Outgoing Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s son KT Rama Rao took a dig at himself as he shared his day-old X post after his party BRS lost to the Congress in the state elections.
KT Rama Rao had posted a picture of himself aiming with a gun and had captioned it: “Hattrick Loading 3.0. Get ready to celebrate guys.”
As it became clear that the Congress was winning, the outgoing minister responded to his own post, saying, “This one ain’t gonna age well. Missed the mark.”
Earlier, the Telangana Congress had shared the picture of KT Rama Rao with the gun and posted on X, “Were you aiming for car tyres?”
Taking a dig at Congress’ Madhya Pradesh in-charge Randeep Surjewala who had expressed confidence of his party’s win ahead of counting of votes, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said, “Sir, how much sweets has the Congress prepared, please list them all, food should not be wasted. We will send the money through UPI.”
In a post on X, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, “I’m just wondering… all those resorts booked by Rahul’s Congress for their MLAs of Rajasthan, MP (Madhya Pradesh) and Chhattisgarh – what happens? Will there be refunds? or will they be ‘adjusted’ for Rahul’s next holiday.”
Memes were also aplenty on the election results with many trolling the Congress for their poor showing in the Hindi-heartland states — Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
A social media user also used the video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Indian cricket team’s dressing room following the World Cup final loss, superimposing the faces of Congress leaders Kamal Nath, Ashok Gehlot and Rahul Gandhi on Indian players.

Twin-Deck AC Buses: Twin-deck Ac Buses Too Tall To Pass Under Sclr Flyover, Kurla (w) Commuters Upset | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The BEST undertaking’s decision to introduce electric-operated AC double-decker buses on route number 310 are not proving beneficial to those travelling to Kurla (W) station as the “excess height” of these vehicles prevents them from passing beneath Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) flyover.
While the non-AC double-decker bus were 4.38 m tall, the new AC double decker bus has a height of 4.75 m.
The AC e-double decker buses on route 310 (Kurla station to Bandra station) were introduced on November 28. The bus traverses through Bandra-Kurla complex (BKC), but those who wish to travel to Kurla West station are not able to board it.
Kurla resident Arun Kamble said, “The AC double decker bus only operates between Kurla depot and Bandra station (E). The distance between Kurla depot and Kurla station is almost 1km. We have to either walk or take another bus to reach Kurla station (W) from the depot.”
Earlier, the double decker non-AC buses used to operate from Kurla station (w) via route 313 (Kurla station-Santacruz station via Kalina), 311 (Kurla station-Santacruz station via Air-India colony) and 332 (Kurla station-Agarkar chowk). All these non-AC double decker buses, including route number 310 used to come via SCLR double decker bridge.
The only solution to this issue to open the road to Kurla station (W) via the Buddha colony junction which was shut in 2015 to prevent congestion. And, after the closure of this access point, vehicles heading towards Kurla station (W) from Kurla depot had to take a U-turn from SCLR to reach the station road. This detour is almost 2km-long and apart from being time-consuming it is also costly for those traveling by autorickshaw.
BEST general manager Vijay Singhal said, “We have requested the MMRDA to allow the traffic to pass through the Buddha colony junction, which is closed at present. Once this happens, the AC double decker buses will be able to reach Kurla station (W).”
Kurla resident Sheldon Pinto said, “How can BEST go ahead and give orders for buses without factoring in the height which is crucial as the buses have to traverse underneath so many flyovers.”

Each bus has a seating capacity of 65 pax, and the minimum fare is Rs 6 for a 5 km ride.
