Leopard: Stray ‘dog’ That Bit Boy Turns Out To Be A Leopard | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Less than a week after a 7-year-old boy from Boisar had been attacked, purportedly by a dogit now emerges that it was leopard that had bitten the child on a foggy morning.
Last Tuesday, around 7am, Prem Patil who lives in Kudan village, was on his way to a grocery shop when he was attacked by an animal. As the child cried out aloud, the animal hurriedly disappeared into the wild bushes, the boy later told people who came to his rescue. Those who had rushed to help the child said they had not spotted any animal around, possibly due to heavy fog cover in the area.
Prem, who sustained injury marks on the head and left cheek, was admitted to a hospital in Silvassa. Going by the boy’s version, the family told doctors that a “stray dog” had pounced on the boy. However, doctors who examined the injury said they suspected that the marks on the cheek bear telltale signs of a leopard’s clawing, more than of a dog.
The leopard theory has been backed by locals who claim to have had occasional sightings of a leopard around the place over the past four or five months.
Accordingly, forest officials were informed and they have launched a search for the wild cat.
Residents have demanded that cameras be set up to trap the spottedd animal.

Gujarat tops India in seizures of fake Rs 2k notes

The Rs 2,000 currency note was a heavyweight in legal tender introduced post-demonetization in 2016. Though it has been phased out by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) this year, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) serves a jaw-dropping nugget in its 2022 report: Gujarat leads in the seizure of fake Rs 2,000 notes in the country.
The Crime in India-2022 report by NCRB discloses that Gujarat saw the highest seizure of 11.28 lakh counterfeit notes in the Rs 2,000 denomination last year, constituting a whopping 98% of the total national seizure of 11.48 lakh notes in the same denomination. No other state comes close to Gujarat in this disconcerting category.
A far second is the national capital, Delhi, with 73,253 fake notes of Rs 2,000 denomination confiscated in 2022, while Gujarat’s neighbouring state, Rajasthan, came next with 13,653 notes seized.
Gujarat also takes the lead in overall currency seizures across denominations, accounting for nearly 73% of the seizures in the country. The state recorded a total seizure of 30.64 lakh out of the nationwide haul of 42.07 lakh counterfeit notes, the data said.
The seized notes include various denominations, including Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 200, demonetized Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, and the Rs 2,000 notes.
Karnataka closely follows Gujarat in the nationwide tally, with a seizure of 4.59 lakh counterfeit notes in all denominations.
It is important to note that Gujarat had assembly elections in December 2022.
However, the data presented by NCRB differs from the information shared in the state assembly. In March this year, chief minister Bhupendra Patel, responding to a query during Question Hour, reported 26 cases related to fake currency seizures in the state in 2021 and 2022. As many as 2,086 counterfeit currency notes were recovered in nine cases in 2021, while 14,165 were seized in 17 cases in 2022, said Patel in a written reply to a question by Congress MLA Anantkumar Patel.

India vs Australia: Young Indian stars who stood out in the T20I series triumph | Cricket News

BENGALURU: A team without their superstars pulling off a commanding 4-1 series victory against an equally fresh Australian T20 squad may not have been significant if not for the 2024 T20 World Cup. The five-match face-off was crucial for India, and the Suryakumar Yadav-led home team made a telling statement of talent and temperament.
From the form of opener Ruturaj Gaikwad to the fearless hitting of Rinku Singh and the guile of spinners Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patelthere were plenty of takeaways.TOI takes a look at the performers of the series, which concluded here on Sunday night.

RUTURAJ GAIKWAD

Gaikwad had an awful start to the series, he was run out by his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal without facing a ball in Visakhapatnam. But he put that behind him to score a 43-ball 58 in the ensuing contest in Thiruvananthapuram. With 223 runs, Gaikwad finished with the most runs by a batter in a T20I bilateral series against Australia.
He backed his 58 with an unbeaten 123. With India beginning to firm up the T20 World Cup team, the 26-year-old will look to continue knocking hard on the selectors’ doors when the team plays three T20Is against South Africa later this month.

RINKU SINGH
Having been on the fringes for a couple of years, Rinku Singh first came to the fore in the 2022 Indian Premier League. But what enhanced his reputation as a fearless striker of the ball was this year’s IPL. Turning out for Kolkata Knight Riders against holders Gujarat Titans, the 26-year-old from Uttar Pradesh smashed pacer Yash Dayal for five successive sixes in the final over to steer his team to an improbable win. He has often showcased that he has more than brutal power in his repertoire with his mix of classic and unorthodox shots.
As the top-order batters Jaiswal (53), Gaikwad (58) and Ishan Kishan (52) helped themselves to half centuries in the second fixture, Rinku struck an unbeaten 9-ball 31 (4×4; 2×6). If he executed a copybook pull shot off a short ball from Sean Abbott to find the boundary, in the next delivery, a low full toss, he exhibited wrist work to go over the bowler for a maximum. Rinku has a chance to further his case for the finisher’s slot in the three T20Is against South Africa.

SURYAKUMAR YADAV
Wearing the captaincy mantle in the absence of Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma, it was a coming-of-age series for Suryakumar Yadav—the leader. With the bat, the highlight of the series for the 30-year-old was 42-ball 80 in the opener. Composed, smiling and never too far away from putting a hand around a fumbling bowler, Suryakumar marshalled his resources with aplomb. Stressing on the need to express themselves, he backed his players when the chips were down
A case in point: In the final match on Sunday, Arshdeep Singh’s full tosses had been deposited across the Chinnaswamy stadium in the first three overs he bowled. Having conceded 37 runs off 18 deliveries, Suryakumar tossed the ball to Arshdeep to defend nine runs in the final over. “Suryabhai told me whatever happens will happen,” revealed the pacer after the match. Backed by his captain’s confidence, Arshdeep gave away just three runs and picked up a wicket to ensure India’s win.

RAVI BISHNOI
The 23-year-old from Rajasthan, who was adjudged the Player of the Series, was also the highest wicket-taker (nine wickets). The leggie was the standout bowler for India as he tied the Australians up in knots in Powerplay. Also, in the middle overs he ensured the Australians did not break away. Finishing with a strike rate of 13.33 per wicket, he proved more than just a handful for the visitors with his deceptive googlies and wrong’uns.

AXAR PATEL
Ignored for the series against South Africa, there have been questions about Axar’s future in T20Is. Away from the chatter, the 29-year-old allowed his performance to speak for him. Over the last 10 days, Axar highlighted his utility not just as a left-arm spinner but also as a pinch hitter. With the ball, he worked in tandem with Bishnoi to test the Australian batters and cut out runs at crucial junctures. In the final match, with most top-order batters struggling to read the pitch, Axar showed remarkable application during his 21-ball 31. He returned to claim a wicket while giving away just 14 runs off 24 deliveries.

CBSE Sticks To Policy: CBSE sticks to policy of not declaring percentages - (Publication Name) |

Mumbai: While colleges and universities offering higher education seek calculation of percentage of students passing class 10 and 12 examsthe Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has reiterated that it will not calculate, declare or inform the percentage of marks obtained by students, which has been their practice over the years.
While CBSE does not award division, distinction or aggregates to class 10 and 12 students, other education boards like the Maharashtra State Board release percentage of marks scored by students.CBSE issued a notice on November 30 following requests from parents and students to intimate the criteria for calculating the percentage of the students in the board’s exams.
The board has advised admitting institutions to do the calculation of percentage of marks at their end, if required. Even past students seeking employment have been approaching the board for calculation of percentage. Employers too have been urged to calculate percentages at their level, where needed.
The board did away with giving percentages to discourage negative competition among students. The board even stopped publishing the merit list of class 10 and 12 students in the past few years. The Maharashtra state board has also done away with the merit list as the practice puts tremendous pressure on students. Schools, including CBSE, in their individual capacity have, however, been publishing and displaying the percentages obtained by their students.
Schools have been allowed to calculate the percentage of their students, if required. “We have been issuing the percentage to students on our school letterhead. But some colleges have issues with that and want the board to give a percentage,” said the principal of a CBSE school. The board only issues mark sheets.
In case of students who had taken more than five subjects, the decision to take the best of five subjects may be taken by the admitting institution or employer, the board has stated.
Parents complained that some schools do not give the percentage even at their level, making it difficult to seek admissions in foreign universities. Principals said they stick to the board’s rule of not calculating percentages. “A school has every right to not calculate the percentage. By and large most higher education institutions now know that CBSE does not award percentages.”

Power Boost: City’s Western Suburbs To Get Power Boost Against Outages | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: New residential and commercial centres mushrooming in Bopal, Ghuma, Motera, Jhundal, Koteshwar, Shela, Tragad and Gota has led to a sporadic rise in demand for electricity. However, the high demand is also causing overloading, leading to frequent power outages and disruptions.
Gujarat government-owned power companies, Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (UGVCL) and Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO), have embarked on bolstering their transmission infrastructure in these new western municipal wards. For this, these power companies have acquired six plots from Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) worth Rs. 217.94 crore recently.
This strategic acquisition is for setting up four new substations — constructed by GETCO — which are expected to enhance power capacity in these areas. Additionally, UGVCL has purchased two plots for construction of sub-divisional offices in Gota and Chandkheda to strengthen its local electricity network.
The rapid development of Ahmedabad’s western suburbsparticularly along SP Ring Road and SG Highway, has put a strain on existing power distribution infrastructure, causing frequent outages, especially in monsoons. These disruptions have caused considerable inconvenience to residents and businesses alike.
Last year, UGVCL and GETCO conducted a comprehensive reassessment of the current and future power requirements of these areas. “It became essential to assess the demand for areas adjoining SP Ring Road,” stated an AMC official, requesting anonymity. ” Six plots have been earmarked for substations, and new proposals are being considered,” added the official. Investments in infrastructure by the power companies will bring major respite to residents in Ahmedabad’s north-west and south-west areas.
