Paonta Sahib sub-division of district Sirmaur of Himachal Pradesh is surrounded by 4 rivers. Every year in the rainy season, these rivers create havoc by showing their wrath. Paonta Sahib includes the main river Yamuna, tributaries Bata, Giri and Tons and many other gorges. The rivers and ravines remain in spate as soon as the rains begin in the district.

In the absence of channelization, these rivers wash away the plans of IPH every year. According to the department, a loss of 200 to 300 crores is caused by Yamuna river every year. Jal Shakti Department had sent the DPR for channelization of 22 km radius of Himachal side of this river to Jal Shakti Ministry, Himachal earlier this year. After this it has been sent to the Central Cabinet for approval.

Shunkar Khad in Paonta Sahib sub-division has been channelised. Channelization has taken place on this ravine in 11650 meters radius from Kolar to Ghunghal. In which Rs 14 crore 37 lakh has been spent. Due to this, 584.60 hectare land of farmers has been protected.

Apart from this, 1537.81 hectare land of farmers has been saved by spending Rs 34 crore 67 lakh on Bata river channelization. Channelization of 18470 meters has been done on both sides of the river in the range from Batapul to Bykua. Bata river used to cause a loss of about 8 crores every year. Before channelisation, every year dozens of people’s land was washed away and thousands of bighas of standing crops were destroyed.
