To improve the cleanliness system of Chandigarh, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has taken a new initiative under Mission Clean Chandigarh. Under ‘four dustbins every day’, the corporation has asked the residents to take a pledge that they will segregate the waste from the source.

The Corporation has clearly stated that under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, all households will have to segregate the waste from its source. The corporation has clarified that in case of non-segregation of waste, fine will also be imposed.

Corporation commissioner Anindita Mitra has said that people will have to install 4 types of garbage buckets. This arrangement has been made under the Solid Waste Management Act. This will help in better management of waste in the city.

This type of waste has to be segregated

The four types of waste that have been asked to be segregated are dry waste, wet waste, toxic waste and sanitary waste. Dry waste includes paper, plastic, wood, cloth, thermocol, metal and rubber. Sanitary waste includes sanitary napkins, disposable diapers, bandages and material that comes in contact with blood.

Wet waste includes all types of kitchen waste including cooked food, uncooked food, vegetables and fruits, tea leaves. Toxic waste includes paints, cosmetics, medicines, thermometers, syringes, batteries, tube lights, bulbs, plugs, wires, electric waste, etc.

this is the fine amount

For non-segregation of wet, dry and toxic waste, residential houses will be fined Rs 232 for each default. Similarly, marriage/party/festival halls, exhibition halls, clubs, cinema halls, community halls, multipurpose halls etc. having less than 5000 sq. ft. will be fined Rs. A fine of Rs 1,158 will be imposed.

On the other hand, sanitation related waste will be fined Rs 232 in residential area, Rs 579 in non-residential, Rs 5,789 on encroacher and Rs 11,576 on encroacher for burning solid waste in open, throwing it in open, pretending and suppressing it.

being made aware

The Municipal Corporation is putting up awareness posters and boards across the city to segregate 4 types of waste. A QR code is also given on it. Through this more information can be obtained. The corporation has also given the option of complaining about littering.

Work is going on fast for waste processing: Commissioner

Anindita Mitra told that the Municipal Corporation is trying to streamline the waste processing. For this it is very important that the waste is segregated at its source itself. This will allow it to be processed effectively. The Corporation has increased the processing capacity of wet waste from 70 TPD to 140 DPD.

This has been increased in the last 6 months. On the other hand, the work of upgradation of the plant related to dry waste has also been started. It will be operational in next 3 months. Apart from this, a plant of horticulture waste is being set up at 3BRD. Soon the corporation will be able to process 100% of the city’s waste.
